Official Conor McGregor thread (part 2). Read warning in 1st post

The last thread was nearing the 10k post limit so here's part 2.

The same rules as the last thread apply here. People seem to have strong opinions either way when it comes to McGregor and threads here tend to get a bit heated from time to time. Please keep it civil and discuss all things Conor in a mature way.
Any name-calling, trolling, baiting, or being a general ass-hat will earn you a ban from the thread and possibly the forum.
If you have an issue with a post, please use the report post function. Any off topic posts will be deleted.
Any "Do you even train Bro?" or "I'm an mma fan longer than you" type posts are not permitted either. They only make you look like a fool and as a result, everyone hates you. Yes everyone.

So Dana is interviewed and doesnt seem overly upset, says he still likes Conor etc. JK is tweeting smiley faces, phew the sun still rose etc Conor is out eating steaks seemingly without a care in the world. Very surprising reactions on all sides.

My conspiracy theory is that its a combination of the fact that Diaz v Conor 2 did not generate the excitement they thought it would, diaz will be a tough tough fight again with no guarantee of a successfu, diaz messed up their real plan for UFC200 i.e. GSP v Conor and they never wanted a diaz headling the biggest card in history (his comments last time that everyone in the UFC is on steriods wouldnt have helped his case) and there is potential for everyone to make megabucks in New York. Everyone wins except for Diaz unless he remains as headliner which may not happen.

There is a cue of people waiting to fight Conor McGregor. Reason? Purse and having a crack at someone who sets themselves up as being the best. Jealousy etc etc. There is a long list.

Ultimately Diaz wanted to fight McGregor, because in that footage, his purse was 20k. This is a disgrace for a fighter who has been fighting top opponents for the past 10 years. Of Course he was calling out on McGregor.

Next point, was he or was he not training?

Yes and no. He was training, as he admits to training every day. This could either be for triathlons or for fighting.

He was not in a training camp for a fight. Reason?

1 His shape. He was carrying weight. No fighter would go in and fight in that sort of shape unless they were caught on the hop.

2 Reference from the audio of his corner at the end of the fight. 10 day camp was mentioned at least once.

I would believe that he indeed wanted to fight McGregor, the sooner the better, but was not expecting it in 2016. They asked Nate before they asked Khabib, who threw his name into the ring as soon as the news about dos Anjos injury got out. Khabib would have been a much bigger fight, as this guy is undefeated. It is a curious way of picking your opponents.

Funny thing is that even if Conor does come out with a statement of why he refused his media obligations and why he's "retiring" we'll still have arguments about those things. A significant proportion of people just won't believe him.

"Yeah sure, he says it's because of X, but I think it's really because he's scared of Diaz / angling for more money / been replaced by a lizard person / in love with Dana and can't bare to be around him any longer"

Lost a lot of respect for McGregor, and losing even more as the time goes by, over this whole affair, without any clear explanation of what is up here.

He always spouts up about his fans and how important they are to him. If this is all indeed true he has shafted a load of them massively by failing to fulfil his obligations for UFC 200. I'm sure a fair few have splashed out on flights. Fair enough if something out of his control occurred to stop him fighting, but so far this sounds like a total power struggle between him and the UFC.

I also do not like people using another man's death as some sort of bargaining chip, or even a speculated "excuse".

Whole thing stinks.

McGregor was probably expecting Dana & Co to be crying and down on their knees begging him to not retire and fight at 200 at this stage. What a blow to get if that's the case.

These guys fight for living, I don't think anyone is afraid of. Yes you'll have nerves but they'll make the walk to the octagon. Conor could have went back to 145 but he wanted stay at 170.

I believe its down Dana pulling back on conor leash, saying enough is enough. If they really wanted they could have done media by video link but then everyone would want it.

I think this is all a play on words.
One can retire from an event or can retire from employment.
Dana was very clear in saying that he will not be fighting at UFC200, not that he wont be fighting in the UFC again.

Has anything new happened since yesterday evening?

My point though is that the same could be thrown at any of the theories in this thread. It's all speculation. Nobody's idea about why he's retiring, or if he's retiring, has anything backing it up bar "I think this is likely based on my opinion of McGregor and the UFC"

Agreed. He needs to make a proper public statement about the whole thing. Give his side of the row over the media obligations and clarify his retirement tweet.

This is new territory for McGregor. 1st defeat in UFC. Now he has to go in front of the cameras and promote the fight in front of the world. What does he say? He has to totally reinvent himself. Maybe his pr company are still training him in what he should say in the next press conference. Part of the promotion involved an appearance in Stockton, CA, Diaz home town. That would have been a hard gig to fulfil for Conor. He might be looking to do this promotion from skype now, I wouldnt be surprised if he comes out and says that he was in the middle of some serious training and couldnt leave it for that reason.

Dana taking the high road is a smart move. He reacted angrily when Nick Diaz was a no-show versus GSP and that just made Nick Diaz way more popular as an anti-establishment fighter.

Dana can control the narrative and make Conor look like a diva without actually implying he is. He said he wasn't one bit angry with Conor but you know that is absolute nonsense, himself and Lorenzo most likely lost their ****. They have to appear like they don't care though because otherwise it strengthens Conor's bargaining position.

Anyone remember when Jon Fitch wouldn't sign over his lifetime image rights for no compensation and he not only fired him but also threatened to ban all other AKA fighters from competing for not being "team players". I think this a more natural reaction for Dana but he's obviously been watching a good bit of Game of Thrones and knows how to play the game a bit better now.

People have said the UFC has had stars before that have left but have never had someone even close to the appeal of Conor. He is the most profitable fighter in the history of the UFC. Even though he's the best paid, he still earns them ten times what they pay him. Like who else could they build up over the next 2 years to take his place? There's no other fighter with the same xfactor as him.

I find it interesting that more retired fighters seem to support him than current ones on the roster. People are scared to go against the company line and that is why fighters will never have a union, as the ones who didn't want a union would end up being the only people left.

UFC president Dana White said that he was going "back and forth over a few days" with Conor McGregor, until ultimately they made the decision to pull him off the landmark event in July. When asked if McGregor could still be returned to the card if he decides to take a last minute flight out to make the press conference, White said that wasn't going to happen.

"Friday is not the first day of promotion. All the fighters are here (in Vegas) right now," he told UFC Tonight. "This is UFC 200, 20 million dollars are going to be spent in marketing. The commercial being shot right now is over a million dollars. Friday is the first day, and he is already missing stuff, so the window is pretty much closed."

"That's the big thing right now. It isn't whether or not Conor McGregor is fighting at UFC 200. It's been announced. We've said he's not fighting. It's not happening. That fight is off.

"The big question now is: 'Are you really retired?' If you are, that belt is vacant and [Jose Aldo and Frankie Edger] will fight for the title."

"If McGregor is truly retired, the belt is vacant. The other thing is, if Conor McGregor is truly retired, it would take him four months to come back because of USADA. You can't just say you're retired then not have random drug testing for however long you're out then decide 'I'm going to come back now.'"

Apart from the upcoming press conference and the commercial in Las Vegas, White says they were supposed to have a media tour where they go to Stockton and New York as well.

McGregor has yet to give his side of the story, or confirm any of the retirement talk from earlier

So with this train of thought he doesn't retire, doesn't give up the belt and fights the winner of Aldo/Edgar?

That's all fine, but whether they like the McGregor/Diaz rematch or no, surely they have to see that no McGregor at 200 will eat into their profits at their showcase event.

I wouldn't rule anything out because there's a real absence of information (we haven't really heard from Conor at all) but my inclination is that they've reached a genuine impasse, one that will inevitably be resolved because of the amount of money at play, but it's a matter of when really. Does Conor take 3 years out and come back the best in the Featherweight Division? I don't think so, that's not even beginning to look at his ambitions to conquer the heavier divisions.

If McGregor's ambitions still lie in MMA then he's just as much in need to get this sorted than the UFC are.
