Detailing chat

Hi I've been thinking it'd be nice to have a thread where simple questions that people don't want to create a thread for, could go. Or any chat related to detailing.

I've a question. If I've put a wax on, then a sealant. Then after a few weeks or w/e I'm thinking the shine isn't what it was. (After washing obviously) Can I apply wax on top of whatever sealant and wax is left from the first time, or do I have to remove the remaining sealant + wax first?

All I've ever done is once the foam solution is gone, let the clean water flow through for a few seconds.

That's all you have to do, to keep it working well. When its emtpy a 5 second purge of just water. Or screw the bottle off of there is solution left. If you were being extra cautious, rinse the bottle out, put a drop of water in it and use it so it's really purging it...or as Vectra does, uses and APC mix to really clean the internals!

Here's one - Iron X or Bilt for the wheels? I'm tempted to get a 5L bottle as it works out cheaper in the long run. Dave, is 5L something you can order especially rather than give the business to some UK website? I just don't know which is the better product, maybe there's nothing in it?!

CarPro IronX and Bilt Hamber Korrosol are dedicated fallout removers. Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel is more geared to wheel cleaner but has fallout remover in it too. Any of them would be overkill for a regular wash routine. I would recommend a normal wheel cleaner for week to week washing and every 3rd or 4th wash to keep them in tip top shape, use a fallout remover....Auto Wheel in this case. But if you are buying volume, you might also want to use a bit on the paintwork ocassions, in which case it would be IronX or Korrosol

Yes, I can get them but there would be a bit of a wait. IronX is a 4l drum, both Bilt Hamber products are 5l drums.

I get my AutoWheel from DetailingShed in 5L drums. It may be overkill to use AutoWheel as part of a regular wash routine but it does ensure that the wheels stay free of bonded contaminants and it's a huge help with keeping the barrel of the wheel in top condition after a detail.

The way I see it is that it's a touchless wash for alloys and that suits me.

Made my first attempt at washing, detaring, de ironing and claying today, unfortunately due to the weather I had to stop half way through claying as the heat of the body work was drying in nearly instantly making is quite difficult I found. Likewise with detaring, wasn't been giving a long enough chance to work.

You shouldn't do any claying or almost anything that needs liquid on hot panels and/or in direct sunlight. From this time of the year onwards I have to wait until about 2pm until my wash area is in the shade before I do any cleaning of the car.

It'll be fine to use snowfoam solution.

My partners father has removed the taxi stickers from the doors of his car. He has got all of the old glue off and is looking for something to bring the shine back to were the stickers were. I'm not really keen to give him my das6 considering he hasn't used one before and I don't really have the time to do it myself until probably mid May. Is there anything he can apply by hand to sort it? Or would a few passes of a DA with some Menzerna do a bit more of a permanent job on it?

I'd say any hand compound could do it, something like Megs Ultimate Compound/Chemical Guys V32. Menzerna 300/400 on a hand pad might work but haven't tried Menzerna on a hand pad.

I had a good few fine scratches on my Citroen c4 . had it since October and its just been in for head gasket . I didn't mind cause I haggled 500 off anyway cause I felt they tend to go at the mileage.

Anyway I spend all weekend polishing and waxing . did black trim and got a proper interior cleaner at work . fair play the car looked like new . I was so chuffed .

Until yesterday afternoon when a clown pulled out in front of me at a junction . I'm heart broken .

Even with low pressure from a tap should a pressure washer still manage fine ?

After today I'm trying to pin point if its the flow from the tap or the machine itself that's my issue.

Could be wrong but I'd imagine so long as you're not running it for long periods of time and instead use short bursts, it'd give time for the hose to fill up between 'shots'?

But I'm not clued into the ins and out of pressure washer technology so don't take my word for it.

Once you have a constant flow of water I think you should be fine.

My understanding of a pressure washer is it takes low mains water on one side of the pump and accelerates it up giving a higher pressure.

What problem are you having exactly Jingles?

The best way of explaining it is as if it's running dry, and when is does run dry the motor still runs even when I take my hand of the trigger.

It's only a cheap ROK washer.

It's not the pressure that's the issue but the flow. All pressure washers require a minimum flow to work correctly ( normally expressed in liters per minute). You should check what the minimum is for your machine before you do anything else. Or You should bring it to somewhere with good flow to check it out.

300 litres per hour is not a lot. The tap should be well able for that.
Do you normally have a good flow out the end of the water hose itself?
if so. Have you check if there is a filter inside the hose connector on the back of the power washer?
This could possibly be chocked and starving the washer of water.
