The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

Not to worry I went for (1.4) TSi as well. But the conversations so far are about the features of the car such as keyless, nav etc. so thankfully we can still be included.

Highline with tech pack is a great car. When are you getting it?

Arrived in to Dublin last Saturday on the boat, so had to go to holding first and then onto the dealer. Could be ready Saturday but now I have another commitment so may have to leave it a week, which also puts me into a predicament with the road tax. Don't fancy getting it on the 29th and paying a full months tax for essentially 2 days.

Only problem is I wouldn't be able to get there, have matches on Friday and Saturday, so Saturday week is looking like the earliest I could pick it up!

Sigh. Another example of a clueless dealer. Your car has the same radio unit as any other Golf. App connect can be activated on it - for a fee of course.

Dealers haven't a clue.
I was told to book the car in for activation. When I contacted the service dept. to book it in they wanted €300.
Salesman said sorry didn't know it was a cost option. Pissed off to say the least.
He lost a passat sale over it.

You're not going to get it free of charge! If you went into PC World to buy MS office, would you expect to get it for free?

It's a piece of software. The dealer has to pay VW for it. They aren't going to download it from BitTorrent.

The big problem here is how it's been communicated to customers, that's been very poor. When the message on the radio says "contact the dealer for activation"... It's pretty misleading. Not to mention the general cluelessness that's par for the course with VW dealers.

Its misleading from VW and I was under impression that it should work oout a box with mib 2. And €300 is well overpriced imo.

Works with MIB 2 - yes. Free - no. I think that's been pretty clear from the get go tbh.

It's been a factory option in the UK for a while - about £100. It's never been officially on the Irish spec / options list, but I believe it can be factory spec'd for approx €150.

Whether it's worth €300 to retro fit it, I don't know, it's very subjective. Is an IPad worth €600? The dealer hasn't much say in the cost, the cost is dictated by VW. Part of the cost of course is the dealers labour charge ( 70-80 quid ish) and that's probably your only angle for wangling a discount.

I managed to get it free on 2 cars, but I told them I wasn't taking the cars unless they gave me their word they wold activate it when they got the codes in.

Limestone grey. I was tempted by it... but on dull days (of which we get far too many), it looks a bit too beige for me.

I wonder why the spare has to come out? It must be a bigger sub than the dynAudio one - I think that one sits inside the spare wheel.

I'm no audiophile but the standard system sounds good to me and even passengers have commented that it sounds "beefy". Anyone who's spec'd DynAudio seems to rave about it too though, apparently that's the bees knees.

Yeah just looking. I had an after market system put in a previous car and it was excellent. Just not sure about this thing. Prob 500 quid could be better spent else where, if I was sure if have the car for 5 years or more maybe, but that is unlikely.

So I took a spin to the launch of the new Tiguan to try android auto and it was very buggy. Only google maps worked, probably my phone or a setting somewhere but I did try for some time different things so in the mean time I'll keep my €300.

On a side note, the digital dash that no doubt will be in the next Golf, if not the face lift is very nice.

I can't see the digital dash being standard for a while - not even in the MK8 Golf. It'll likely be an option - an expensive one - for the foreseeable.

Anyone know why all the Rs are 5 door?! I am selling my mk7 Gti - thinking of upgrading to an R but I have no need for a 5 door -are they just unpopular, or unavailable here? Thanks

Because 90% of people wanting a new one want 5 doors. Yes, they are available in 3 door.

I wouldn't worry about resale so much. A used 3 door will have its own market, especially when it gets older and comes into the price range of a younger buyer. The reason it's rarer mostly comes down to the fact that it's a 50k car and lads who can afford a 50k car tend to be a bit older with kids in tow - hence the 3 door is useless.

Having said that, when I traded my 3 door GTI the dealer did spin me some spiel that if my car had been a 5 door he'd have much preferred it!

So if you're thinking of buying new, get whichever number of doors you prefer. But if you're looking used, you'll struggle to find a used 3 door R here at the moment at least.

As for thieves / bank jobs... If that's a serious concern for you, don't buy either version.

The sheer lack of 3 doors should make it hold it's value just as well.
