The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

It is a manual, yeah. It's generally fine in the cruise and even under (mild enough) acceleration and day to day driving it's fine. But pulling off on an incline for example the car just sounds like a diesel with the reverb that thing causes, I was actually surprised by it.

Also, and this may sound completely weird, but I think it's worse/louder when it's cold outside. Probably does have an affect on the acoustics somewhat, but I had a moment just over a week ago when we had those few days of sunshine ad it was warmer, where I thought the soundaktor might have actually broken as the car seemed much more quiet and I could hear the intake/exhaust much more while driving. Back into it over the last few days though and it was back to its normal self.

In Race mode, the sound actuator actually causes interior rattles and buzzes in mine.

The DSG box also badly needs something in-between D and S. S-mode is far too eager to hold onto the revs whereas D is far too eager to get you into 6th as quickly as possible... so I tend to go to S-mode and from there straight over to Manual mode.

I just ordered one of those OBDeleven things anyway. So once I have that any one of you guys around the Dublin area is more than welcome to get any tweaks from it that you wish.

There are a LOT of modules in the MK7. It's mind boggling stuff. I know when my buddy was making tweaks with mine with the proper VCDS cable we were a good while just backing up the existing settings.

Took about a half hour to scan all the modules on mine, got there in the end though. I must do a bit more tweeking.

Nope. I don't have the sport and sound pack. Standard with alcantara interior and carplay. That's it.

Crawling in traffic due to road works, and a lorry coming the other way decides to drop some of it's load. A rock the size of lunch box comes tumbling down the road towards me, and hits the car around the front wheel somewhere. I get out to take a look at the damage, and by pure chance it hit the tyre, and the tyre only. It would have made a mess of the wheel or bodywork had it touched them, would have been the last thing I need!

I actually dont like that on the Audi but I dont mind it on the Golf now that I see it! I find on the Audi its a bit much as it lights so in so many sections (too many individual lights I mean). As its only 2 on the Golf its actually kinda cool

I'm a little on the fence about it myself - there's a fine line between a nice OEM touch and "Halfords" as we all know. Anyway, it's really easy to reverse it if I change my mind.

I listen to podcasts via bluetooth connection to my iphone 6s all the time, so in the house I would be listening via the speaker on the phone, pause the podcast. Jump in the car and drive. Radio would come on and continue playing the podcast. However since I updated my phone the podcasts remain paused in the car until I hit play. Anyone else or just me ?

I find media playback (whether it be podcasts/music/spotify) flakey at the best of times and I often have to connect/reconnect or play/pause a couple of times to get it going!

wowzers - I have to say I've found the bluetooth flawless, and thats from me using every day practically for the last 14 months or so. Its only since I updated to the latest IOS that I've had a problem

Are we all using iphones or android ?

Lack of source button on the steering wheel is something I miss.

On the bluetooth audio, I find that volume up on the steering wheel can be used to resume music. For example, I'm I'm bopping along to Britney or little mix and I get a phone call, after the phone call the music doesn't resume on its own. Volume up on steering wheel does it though.

And another thing that bugged the shìt out of me for ages was the system defaulting to my work phone which has one fecking song on it by James bay. Every single time I would have to go into bluetooth settings and a few button pushes to flick over to the other phone.

In fairness technology has made us all impatient, I want it now, working first time all the time pricks. I'm putting effort into complaining here from my sofa drinking a coffee

I don't use the usb port on the car. Iv a micro usb charger thing and it sits under the armrest. Short usb cable and phone sits on top of slider thing behind gearstick. Charges and BT works fine then as it's only getting power, no data/usb signal from car.

To unlock you put your hand inside the handle - as if you are about to open the door. You don't even need to touch the inside of handle, or at least the slightest touch will do. You don't touch the outside of handle if unlocking.

To lock, you just gently pass your finger over the little dimple on the outside - where the keyhole would be on older cars. If you press that dimple again it'll "lock" again - the hazards will flash...

Generally I find it works really well but it's not perfect. One annoyance is when washing the car. I have to leave the keys in the house, otherwise I keep locking/unlocking the damn thing with the hose pipe :pac:

If for some reason you want the mirrors to stay folded out when locked try this trick - lock the car. Then unlock it again without opening a door. It'll auto lock again itself in 20-30 seconds but the mirrors will stay unfolded.

Another neat thing is that it will not let you lock the keys in the boot. If you attempt to lock the car and your key is inside the car at all, it won't lock... An error flashes up on the dash too.

I find it works well, no issue with it so far. We have another car albeit not a vw, and 2 of the 4 door sensors no longer work. One was already replaced during warranty time but car is now out of warranty. Hopefully the vw ones are more robust, it's a feature I really like as it's used everytime I use the car.

It eats the keyfob battery too. Had to change the battery in the. GTI key after a little over a year.

I found the keyless a little odd to start with also, what I noticed is that I was sometimes having trouble locking the car by touching the dimple - I was using my thumbprint to do this and more often than not it would take several attempts to lock (many times giving up to get the key and press the button). If however I touch it with any other part of my hand it works perfectly, so I give it a little backhand to lock it.

Doesn't even have to be the Nav unit. Any MIB II unit should be upgradable.

Yeah have the tech pack included. He was saying he was going to an App-Connect workshop on Friday so maybe that might clear it up.

Separate note, you weren't in the Detailing Shed on Saturday were you? Couldn't tell if it was your car that pulled up while I was in there.
