300 jobs lost in Dublin but nothing in the media about it???

Hi folks .

Thought I would post this here. The xbox support call centre that was in Dublin gave notice to 300 workers on Monday that their role would cease to exist at the end of the month. Workers redundancy was two weeks per year and an xbox live subscription .

I don't work for them honestly but I have a family member who does and it just irks me to see nothing about this in the new news.
Am I just being petty or should job losses like be reported on national news ?

I believe that was an outsourcing agency who were doing it. Its very likely they lost the contract but may have been limited in when they could disclose it to their staff. A lot of services business is setup like this in this country. I wouldn't recommend anyone to be working in a managed services scenario.

Maybe someone should tell the media? They don't know everything unless they get a tip or press release. I very much doubt there's an agenda as some seem to think.

Most lightly, I'm a contractor myself & If my employer lost the contract I could be let go with a months notice, its pretty scary how may people are employed in this manner.

Only type of contracts that are worse are zero hour...

If you're a contractor in IT you're more than likely paid above the rate an employee would be so to compare it to being just above zero hour contracts is disingenuous. There's a lot of money to be made contracting.

Yep, contractor in IT, My pay isn't great but it isn't bad either tbh. I was more comparing on the basis of job security rather than pay.

Yeah, hence the good renumeration to compensate. It can be a very good earner if you accept the job insecurity and rolling contracts. Everyone who does it are aware of it though.

How many full time staff were there? Where was the call centre ? Anywhere near Dublin and the office won't be empty to long and probably filled with high value jobs

I honestly don't know what sf expect from that link.

More specifically, I am asking the Minister to intervene and seek another company to take this over as a going concern and for him to do all in his power to ensure that these vital jobs are saved.

Why would another company take over 300 jobs with no work for them to do? The contract was lost...

Did you actually email RTE?

I emailed them about a place closing down in a similar situation and they got the story out the same day.

People don't necessarily put out a press release about firing 300 people.

For every IT contractor who is on big money there are three or four on really crap money, without holiday pay, and without other benefits. My girlfriend can't even get a tax saver bus ticket because it was considered a loophole and got closed a couple of years ago.

If there not getting holiday pay then they are a contractor, I've yet to meet an contractor on less than 350 a day
