unsuitable subjects on daytime radio in Ireland

I like to think of myself as not a prude, have very conservative ideas, not easily shocked or offended and up for open discussion - but I have just been listening to the Eoghan McDermott Show on 2FM and he has been asking some young teenage girls if they have ever used Sex Toys, live on air....

Is there no regulations at all on what can be discussed and at what time on radio in Ireland or has that gone beside the wayside?

Whats it for, the shock factor or to get more listeners? , especially younger ones maybe? - Ive listened to his shows before on 2FM and a few times he has broadcast stuff unsuitable and near to the mark for the time of day thats in it.

I mean 2FM radio blasts out in Supermarkets , petrol forecourts and other public places , do you not think they could just make it suitable for all audiences young and older, where you can just relax and listen to some music if your stuck in a jam or go shopping instead of discussing taboo and sordid subjects like this at 6pm

Or am I being too sensitive? - please try and refrain of the old saying "if you dont like it switch over to another radio station" - Id like to get peoples views on it.

Competition for market share is cut throat, being edgy will increase market share. A good example is getting a spokesman from PBP/AA or an extreme feminist and so on, its a tactict related to click bate

Depends really. Some very serious topics might be considered taboo but worth discussing - re the current court case regarding incestuous abuse etc, on the other hand sex toys is merely trash talk for working class oiks.

I remember being in a car dealers waiting on some work to be done and there was Gerry Ryan filtering out of the radio discussing oral sex and the depiction of same on screen in porn films. No doubt Ryan was damp at the time and also probably stoned.

Young teenage ? How old ? I would of thought that if they were under 17 he would be on dangerous ground.

But the subject matter of using sex toys shouldn't be time restricted.

It's like the ad for some laundry delivery service where a guy loses his ticket for his gimp suit. That's on Newstalk around the time parents would be driving their kids to school. I think it's funny, but can imagine the whole "Mommy. Why does that man have a suit with a ball gag?" conversation. :pac:

It's possible that I'm turning into an oul fella, but I've taken to listening to Lyric these days for a number of reasons including the one in the OP. It's not that I have a problem with discussions like this, but there's a time and a place and the middle of the afternoon just isn't the time. The advantage of Lyric is that it seems to be almost entirely politics and current-affairs free, so during the recent election when you couldn't get away from the talking heads on almost every other station you could listen to Lyric without problem.

Mind you, they do push the limits on occasion. I'm looking at you Gay Byrne. You retired years ago, just stop.

The other station which is safe is that religious one (can't remember the name). As long as you don't listen to the lyrics you can fool yourself that it's a 'normal' station. And you can be sure they won't be talking about sex toys, boxing-the-head-off-you sports or anything like that.

I really don't see the need for a public broadcaster to be running a trashy top 30 station, it should be sold off or replaced with a proper service along the lines of bbc radio 2.

Big fan of 2 fm..listen every day.
Have noticed changes similar to this lately..
Understand they want edginess but maybe going about it the wrong way.
Nicky and Jenny had 2 discussions lately that were abit "Ah no"
One was the letter left in the hotel bed and asked for listeners experiences. Jenny herself had some gross ones:mad:
The other was about people pooing in other peoples houses and how they handled it..
Now all for fun but this seems more like going for the cheap route?

Gerry Ryan kept the 2FM ratings up and the revenue rolling in as he was the "shock jock" of the time. Maybe 2FM bosses are trying to see can they re-create the same ratings, with 98fm's Dublin Talks as their competitor.

still think there should be some broadcast regulations in place and some defining rules- if not where will the subjects end? will nothing be out re what they broadcast to the general public - i would cringe to have young children now these days and to pull up to a petrol station or be eating in a fast food restaurant and be greeted with these subjects blaring out! - guess it must be cheaper than playing songs and paying royalties - just babble on about sex and taboo subjects and dont have to pay royalties , thank god most evenings I switch to heart FM at that time, i couldnt be dealing with that crap on 2FM

Irish broadcasters idea of edgy is what yore ma would think is edgy.

Look at the stuff that Stern/Opie and Anthony etc. got away with on FM in the States to see what actually being appropriately inappropriate is.

Irish radio actually needs someone who is willing to be at the very limit of decency to start a push back against the smothering "ah shure, yeh can't be sayin dat" that we have endured for the last forever. Be gross, be controversial, say unpopular things, tackle the sacred cows of Irish society.

Some mildly naughty stories about mild sex things is just pathetic and was probably bought from some radio prep company and will appear in exactly the same form on every single other "light entertainment" radio show on Irish radio over the next few months.
