A friend told me about it last week and I read a bit over the weekend before buying. 17000 is just far too much for it to be niche reviewers. Generally if it's overwhelmingly positive it's a very good game (but doesn't mean it's for you or everyone or the best game ever). I often look at the negative reviews first to gauge an understanding of why some people didn't like it and the reasons just didn't put me off but sometimes they have.

I do agree though that what most likely has happened in some form is alot of people have been waiting for a new Harvest Moon or a clone and will run like fanboys at the thought. Stardew Valley is very much like Harvest Moon but where that game fell short this game looks to be thriving. Barone made a ballsy move of going PC and not handheld and it looks like it worked
Also there is a little bit more going on that just simply farming but it's definitely the core of the game. I'm looking forward to cave exploring and fighting some baddies.

I have automobilista on my list, heard nothing but good things. I don't have time for all the sims out now though. I'd been ignoring dirt up until this weekend, I fired it up and lost a few hours, it's incredible. Just as you think that you might be going a bit too fast you end up in a ditch. Requires absolute concentration, it scares me a little.

But I've barely scratched the surface with that sim. Now I'm going to have to go through the agonizing dilemma of which sim to play. Dirt? Assetto corsa? Dirt? Assetto corsa?

I think you're quite right that a lot of these games do convey what they are pretty well, and that people who are already into that kind of game will obviously respond well, while those who aren't interested won't bother. A rather cynical way of looking at it, is that quite a lot of these highly rated indie games trade on nostalgia, and it's not an unfair thing to say either when you look at their direct inspirations.

Stardew Valley = Harvest Moon
Undertale = Earthbound
Axiom Verge = Metroid
Hyper Light Drifter = Zelda

But I think the real reason these games get so well recieved isn't purely nostalgic, but because there has been a much narrower spectrum of games genres in recent years than there had been previously. Essentially, a lot of genres had been more or less killed off, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow for example while a great game is nothing like the old Symphony of the Night that I loved, it's a very different kind of game. Likewise how EA just made a generic FPS with the Syndicate IP. So with indie games, we're seeing a resurgence of old genres, so more than just straight up nostalgia for a game, the appeal is there when a genre you liked barely exists any more. And of course, being good games is a huge part of it too, if not the most important part. I'd never played Zelda but I can't stop going on about how fantastic Hyper Light Drifter is, likewise Undertale was incredible.

Factorio is another one I've my eye out for once it goes down in price, and the aforementioned Axiom Verge.

Just played through 1979 Revolution and was very impressed by it. On a basic level, it works like a Telltale game, but two things differentiate it.

1. It's actually about something, well, real. As a big fan of Iranian cinema, I'm often frustrated at the limited portrayals of the country in most media. While this isn't Kiarostami level by any stretch, it's a genuine attempt to explore the ideological conflicts of a historical period in the country. There's lots of clever details - your in-game photos being placed side by side with genuine archive photos - that bring the period to life. And there's no side taken by the developer (although I wouldn't consider it a bad thing if there was), so it gives proper space for individual characters with very different methods and beliefs.

2. The fast, choice driven gameplay translates extremely well to a genuinely tense, tetchy real world situation. Decisions here have to be made quickly and doesn't feel as awkward as some Telltale games I've played.

It's not a perfect game, and it's relatively low budget was obviously a challenge. But the developers did a great job, with a story that flows extremely well, even if it's often a pretty straightforward political melodrama at its core. But it's the eye for detail that lends the game serious colour, and in some respects - the voice acting particularly - the production values are legitimately impressive. It's only a tenner, so well recommended for a very admirable and successful attempt at expanding the sorts of stories and settings gaming is capable of.

I think Stardews success is down to simply plugging a gap in the PC market. Added to that is the fact that it not only plugs that gap but surpasses the games that inspired it and its not a surprise. To call it a "niche" game and market is a bit unfair though. It shifted a few hundred thousand copies in a short space of time. Thats hardly "niche".

Hadn't touched Hearthstone in a while and I don't seem to have the patience to play many games that require my undivided attention anymore so I gave it a bash.

I'm working through the two latest Solo Adventures at the moment and getting all the cards with those before I brave the ladder.

It'll be tricky to play competetively when I'm missing most of the new cards but it's nice to look forward to opening new packs that'll mostly contain cards I haven't got before.

It's decent, though not amazing, so far. I'm about 7 chapters in, and the story is the usual survivial horror tripe, but the graphics are really good, it's very atmostpheric, and I'm getting through it. Hopefully, I should get through it over the weekend.

I've finished the Batgirl and Harley Quinn AK DLCs. Yes, they're short, but I only paid 15e for the main game, and 8 for the season pass, so I don't feel short changed. If I had paid the full 40 or so for the season pass, I'd be fairly annoyed. I also dislike that they gave you all these Batmobile skins that CAN'T be used for combat. Crazy.

Started it tonight, never played one before. Got hammered at the first boss until I figured out a decent strategy. Nice to play a game that doesn't do much hand holding, loving it so far!

Been playing guild wars 2 for ages. Now that my mouse has departed I'm finally starting dark souls. This should be painful.

For the last 2 weeks of limited internet access I got around to playing HuniePop. Not as bad as I thought it would be. Kinda grew on me. Super Hexagon always easy to just launch up for under a minute or up to an hour. Divinity: Original Sin EE but I didn't play too much. Feel like it's one I should be playing with a friend.

I rebooted to windows a few times for Blade of Darkness (it's still harder than dank souls), Wanko To Kurasou and Phantasmagoria..

My steam link and controller arrived today, so I'm currently doing a playthrough of Brothers - A Tales of Two Sons on the TV while sat in front of the fireplace.

For the rest of the weekend I was hoping to test out Overwatch but I didn't get in so I'll be trying out the Doom & Battleborn beta along with Siege. Looking for a casual type shooter as I'm more used to stuff like Arma, Insurgency and CSGO.

Nah, Primal has the same map as 4, not 4 as 3. FC4 is much the same as FC3. It's basically a bigger map, with a less interesting villain and more side activities. It's good, but if you've played FC3 recently, you'll get bored fast.

Finished it up recently, got a bit boring half way through so I just finished of the main missions and left the side quests. No interest in looking at the DLC missions

East boss on Hyper Light Drifter killed.

Think I really should've started with that one first, seemed way easier, and I got him in 3 tries. I want to go back around and see what other secrets I can find though, there's some doors I can't get into.
