No one is saying that McG isn't hugely popular, but the UFC was still a hugely popular/profitable company before he showed up and fans such as yourself started tuning in.
JJayoo wrote: » What exactly do you think Ido Portal does? He's basically a mobility warmup, it's like giving out about McGs physio or masseuse
WarZ wrote: » Yeah because we're likely to see McGregor's physio or masseuse being in McGregor's corner for a massive fight  Ido Portal is a huge part of McGregor's camp. It is untrue that he is only there for the 2 weeks before the fight (as is often claimed here). Ido Portal regularly says himself that he is an integral part of the coaching set up even going so far as to say that if McGregor loses the blame could possibly be pinned on him. He advises McGregor on movement, is his strength and conditioning coach (see Ido's own quotes), advises McGregor on jiu jitsu (see quotes) and spars with McGregor (see videos). It's completely ridiculous to say he has as much influence as a masseuse. He is in McGregor's corner, handles McGregor's strength and conditioning and spars with him in the lead up to fights!

Foxtrol wrote: » I’m a fan of Edgar, and would prefer him to be fighting Conor than Diaz, but I can’t say he’s been exactly screwed over. Edgar had three title fights in a row and lost all three (albeit some controversially), his FW shot was after two consecutive losses, his recent run aside from Mendes (who debatably shouldn’t have been allowed in the ring) haven’t really been world beaters, is getting an interim title shot after the champion being inactive for only 7 months (remember all the complaints about McGregor v Mendes being for interim when the champion was inactive for 9 months at that point). Your comparison is ridiculous, the difference between FW and WW is 25lbs while MW to HW is 85lbs. He’s also only really fighting a guy who is one weightclass bigger than him. You seem confused about what a money fight is. Money fights don’t mean lining Fertitas pockets (that’s a byproduct) it’s the fights MMA fans want, and will pay, to see. It’s that simple. MMA purists might turn their nose up to it but it’s up to fighters to make themselves marketable enough to sell fights. That doesn’t purely mean trash talk but also style of fighting and pushing themselves out of their safe place and fighting guys outside their division. Outside of some deluded feeling of ‘fairness’ I cant see how it’s bad for the fans. The world isn’t fair and neither is the UFC, people need to get over it.
lougal88 wrote: » Well obviously I cant. If the main event was Brunson vs Mousasi I'm still gonna tune in like. It's not as if I am going to boycott the UFC. But I'm still entitled to voice an opinion or maybe I'm not if its anti-Conny? To be honest the public would tune in to see McGregor fight anybody. But in my opinion he should fight a solid wrestler with a full camp. That's one of the main reasons a lot of people want to see the Edgar fight. This Diaz fight is a pure ego trip. Regardless of the fact it'll be intriguing. There are better match ups and he should defend his title. In your opinion nobody cared about Frankie. We all have our favourite fighters. You're a Connor fanboy and thats fine. But it's clouded your judgement IMO. I've always enjoyed watching Frankie and to say that nobody cared about 145 before McGregor showed up is exactly the sort of nonsense I've come to expect in this forum. It was a fantastic division in the WEC and had the UFC had a 145 division years earlier Frankie would have dominated it IMO. He held the LW belt for almost 2 years.
Gamebred wrote: » A lot of sense I agree the public will watch McGregor fight his shadow and pay for it,but you gotta admit the 145 division wasnt as big as it is now since Conor came along, nobody was excited for any big 145 fights them ppv tell you that,so the ufc see people buying into Diaz Conor why not go again? It done more than Aldo Conor on a weeks notice and zero undercard really,I'd argue Aldo is deserving of a shot over frankie tbh so he cant really complain not getting to fight Conor, the milk has been hit the floor no point in moaning about the match making now just enjoy it,these fighters give zero ****s about how your treated by your employer another point worth remembering.
lougal88 wrote: » Listen I know the UFC, the fighters, the FW division and all the fans (Irish or otherwise) owe Connor a debt of gratitude for all he's achieved and what he's done. He has brought so many fans to the sport, and so much media attention etc. Having said all that, I still feel disgusted that he isnt contesting either Aldo or Edgar at UFC200 and is instead trying to chase a loss that he is regretting. The huge ppv buys, fight purse etc. are a by-product. This fight is purely about Conor's ego. Anybody who says an Interim title fight (further down the card I might add) is anything less than a farce has McG-tinted glasses on. He isn't injured, he's just not interested in defending the belt yet (if ever). But at this stage I think the public would watch Conor fight a bear. My worry is that the farcical nature continues. Dana says he defends/unifies the belt next. But sure who knows of this will happen? Not like he's a man of his word.
Gamebred wrote: » I suppose him taking the fights on short notice earned him his chance of redemption? along with the payday obviously,he probably dug his heels in and said he wouldnt fight at all if he didnt get the chance to correct his errors v Diaz.
lougal88 wrote: » Absolutely. And I suppose on some level he gets whatever fight he wants based on his willingness to take any fight on short notice. However it doesn't soften the blow for Aldo/Frankie fans. For me if Frankie loses to Aldo his stock takes a huge hit and he may wave goodbye to the title shot for good. That'd be a bitter pill to swallow. I don't like this fight at all. Conor should be fighting both of them. But obviously that can't happen when one loses. Its a lose/lose situation.
Gamebred wrote: » Frankie will beat Aldo,he is more comfortable now at the 145 weight,Aldo hasnt got better really since that fight has he? I'd say Frankie has.
Gamebred wrote: » IDO PORTAL DOES NOT SPAR MMA WITH MCGREGOR!!! Had to stop reading right there my god,he wouldnt last 20 seconds with an amatuer in sbg never mind Conor, they might move around together even shadow box but THEY DO NOT SPAR.
lougal88 wrote: » Well then as a fan of Edgar you will no doubt remember the lack of depth in that 145 division at the time, and that Aldo had beaten all top contenders Mendes Florian Hominick etc. Edgar was a big name finally dropping to a division where he belonged and lost another decision. Also the Rockhold comparison was totally tongue in cheek. I know the difference I'm just making the point that when another fighter no doubt holds up another division to chase a 2nd belt, there will be similar debates. So how do you judge what fights people want to see? Just pure PPV buys? Dunno about that. UFC 196 will do far bigger numbers than 198, but it's clear which is the better card.
WarZ wrote: » There are videos of him sparring with Ido unfortunately. Ido Portal is very much apart of Connor's training. You don't just corner McGregor alongside JK and Roddy if you're no one.
Foxtrol wrote: » If we’re being honest the 145lbs division has never been stacked but it didn’t stop people faux outrage that McGregor was getting his title shot, when these same people had no issues with previous fighters getting their shot at 145lbs with as weak or weaker justification. This faux outrage really is just hilarious. In another post you’re saying how you’re ‘disgusted’ that he’s not defending against Aldo or Edgar. I bet you’re the same sort of poster who didn’t have an issue with Aldo (and champions at other weight classes) taking big breaks between fights and holding up divisions. Similarly, I bet you’re the same sort of poster who called McGregor’s interim title an absolute joke but don’t really mind an interim title for Aldo v Edgar, despite McGregor being active in the division 2 months more recently than Aldo was when that interim was made. How else do you judge what people want to see other than what they will pay for? Again you’re getting confused, what the public wants to see is not the same as your opinion. Quality is in the eye of the beholder and it’s up to fighters to make fans want to part with their hard earned money to see them. I think a lot of Irish fans struggle with this concept as they live in a world of UFC PPVs being either on BT or streamed illegally.
