Yeah this would be my concern. I think there were lots of reasons why NZ would want to change flag, but I think they made a hash of the process and there won't be an appetite to do it again for another 20 years.

I thought there was a few decent ones on the long list.

I preferred this one to the one they went with but when it was mocked up it was navy blue instead of black.

Speaking of TV: I was watching a show called Lilyhammer the othe day. It's about a New York mobster who asks to be placed in witness protection in Lillehammer, Norway because he remembers seeing it on TV during the '94 Winter Olympics and thinking it looked like a nice place.

Decent show, but there's a scene where they were in a bar in this small town in Norway having a drink and I had to do a double take because something in the background caught my eye.

Anybody watch/listen to Garbage Time with Katie Nolan?

It's a Sport's show on Fox Sports (I think?) in the US but most of it gets uploaded to Youtube, legally.

It mainly focuses on US Sports, obviously, but occasionally they talk about other stuff too.

They've started doing podcasts too where she interviews people in the sports/broadcasting world. Some are more interesting than others. There was one with an MMA/UFC "insider" where I learned that the real reason MMA is banned in the state of New York is because some chefs in a casino in Las Vegas want to join a union.

Here's a question...

I'm filling in an application form and on it they ask me to rate my level of Irish. They list the options "competent", "good" or "not good".

The order they're in implies that they consider competent to be better than good, but to me being competent at something implies bare minimum level of ability whereas good implies you're good.

I will be tested to see if I'm at the level I say I'm at so I don't want to put down the one that makes them think I'm going to be able to discuss Obama's trip to Cuba with them as Gaeilge. I've been told that the test they give you is very basic but I need to get as far as the test so..... which one do I put down?

I'm gutted we didn't get a new flag. I liked the new one but I would have taken anything that removed the Union Jack (I felt this before I moved to Dublin) and something that was instantly identifiable as NZ.

I don't give a ****e about how much it cost NZ can afford it.

Yeah this was the problem. The country does want to change the flag: of the 55% who voted for the old flag about 30 will be hardcore keep the old flag no matter what, 10 to 15 want a change but didn't like the new design, and 10 to 15 wanted a change but don't like the prime minister.

I voted for the new flag even if it wasn't the greatest design. Our old flag is terrible.

Be interesting to see if the flag issue goes away or not.

So is there a groundswell for a new Irish flag - tired of always being confused with the better known Ivory Coast?

I'm wracking my brain thinking what kind of job needs to ask such a question. Are you a profession tour guide?

Nope. It's for a library. They say on the application form that you need to be able to perform your tasks in both English and Irish. I've been told by someone "in the know" that it's basically a box ticking exercise and the test they give you is very very basic Irish. It's getting to the test though is the problem.
It's a weird one alright because it basically rules out any non Irish people and possible anyone from NI from applying.

You don't have flag issues til you're calling it "fleg" and rioting cos someone won't let you fly it over the neighbours house!
Actually in NZ at the moment and everywhere you go people are flying whichever flag they wanted to win, heard a good few going on about old timers who fought under that flag as a big reason not to change. Obviously that reason will die out in the next few years...
On a side note super rugby is great to watch but the refereeing is a bit lax to say the least

Right that's it. As a nordie who didn't study irish I am outraged that I cannot apply for this job that I know nothing about. It is an affront to my culture and heritage and is once again discriminating to my community whose culture is being eroded every day. We cannot expect to move forward if people keep ignoring our lack of irish when it's needed for employment. I feel our people are not being afforded the opportunities to further their career because of this blatant discrimination.

Anyway...best of luck with the application.

Donegal Irish is the purest Irish of them all.

My mum is from Donegal and she had to stop helping us with our Irish in primary school because the teachers told her she was derailing their teachings. Came in handy for the Aural Exam for LC though, there's always someone talking about Leitir Ceanainn on there.
