Petrol for a decent spin would cost you less than the price of a few pints and DIY maintenance on a car like this is the price of a good night out once or twice a year

Pop up lights from the first gen look very dated now imho. Second gen looks so much fresher. Luggage rack looks daft though, I'd get rid of that straight away

I already have a convertible :pac: it makes no sense at all to but that. I have some cash burning a hole in my pocket at the moment and I'll do something stupid if I'm not careful:P

Makes sense for the summer if you are looking for something tested and taxed and eligible for classic insurance, i.e ready to put the kids in the back and go off. Its cheap enough

I'd say it's easier to get a '98 MX-5 on classic insurance than a '90 Escort...

The only reason your man is asking so much for the Escort is that it is only 4 years away from Classic Tax. This ups the value of the car by hundreds.

Test for a year, tax for three months, one owner from new and 19k miles! Not overly cheap but you could pay €6/700 for a fairly rugged one any day of the week.

Mechanically yes they are very cheap to maintain. The bodywork let's them down though. They are very prone to rust and in locations that can are hidden and can cause them to become dangerous. For example the front chassis legs are prone to rot on them from the inside out. This is a big issue that effects a lot of these mx5 and is well hidden by road dirt and so on. It's only when people go poking with screwdrivers that they notice this major issue.

I'm not that familiar with them if I'm honest. It has A/C which I wasn't expecting but apart from that I dunno

I won't buy a car without it, doesn't matter about the country cause it can be used in Ireland too and it helps demist the car quickly.

Even in the winter you should use it. The car warms so much quicker if you have the AC on with the temp up.
