The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

Strange they don't just enable everything. I know some bits they charge extra for but some other things are genuinely useful and not even an optional extra despite being possible to activate.

Yeah there's been lots of debate as to why that is. For example, why aren't the full brake lights enabled from factory? I've read some theories that the lights are deemed too bright according to EU regs, but I wouldn't be too sure about that.

The MK6 Golf and Scirocco had "XDS" (traction) disabled and VW charged €€ to enable it. But it was a simple vcds tweak to do so!

I'm thinking strongly about putting my 2015 gti PP up for sale privately.
Would I be wasting my time what with all the cheap pcp deals on new cars available?
I'm thinking I would achieve a better price than trading in but maybe not with the shortage of used cars out there.
Also what would be a fair price for it?
It's carbon grey PP model with leather and keyless. 30k km.
I'm thinking 32 grand or am I way off?

I think on a private sale you're being very optimistic. The number of people out there with 32k in their pocket and no requirement for finance is miniscule...

When I was trading my own last year I considered putting it on doneDeal. I spoke to a guy who'd done just that (sold a 132 on DoneDeal) and he had very little interest in it, he was asking about 28k and sold it for about 24-25 I think.

But hey, you could get lucky. Worth a try.

thanks for the VCDS suggestions - I'm heading to the west coast mid week and I'll bring the laptop along to do a bit of tinkering. I really like the idea of the rear lights being active all the time !

I think you would need to price it extremely keenly to lure someone away from a 161 deal where they have the security of buying from a dealer, finance options etc even though your car is in warranty. So keenly you may get a better price on a trade in if that's what you are doing. No harm sticking it up as it'll cost a few euro and from experience of putting cars in that price range on done deal/carzone, they typically don't get all the messers. Stick a car up for 8k though and you'll get all the texts and calls you could dream of

Thought if I could get it privately would strengthen negotiating against another car.
I know it is hard to sell privately at this level but you never know.
Would you ask for less straight off?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Does making mods like this have any impact on the warranty, obviously I appreciate that if one ballses up the car entirely you cant expect warranty to clean up after you for free, but say you did a couple of tweaks to lights etc are VW, A: going to know any better? B: going to invalidate the warranty on unrelated issues if they do know?

I was reading a thread in from the states where they were discussing tuning their cars and Volkswagen flagging the cars as "TD1" and voiding the warranty.

Now to be fair, it sounds like these were pretty significant physical modifications - new intercoolers, air intakes, exhausts etc as well as flashing the ECU's for the engines and dsg's - but just wondering, I have an adapter ordered but I am just a tad nervous as to whether to use it or not having read that thread....

TD1 flag is only if the ecu gets flashed so enabling stuff via vcds should be fine. Unless as you say you make a balls of it they shouldn't be expected to stand over it.

I wouldn't worry about warranty with vcds tweaks. Guaranteed your dealer won't notice nor care.

What you should do though before making any tweaks is back up your current settings so you can always revert in the unlikely event you mess something up.

It's hard to know and it greatly depends on what you're buying to replace it!

For example... I was offered 29.5k for my GTI when trading for the R. I knew that if I was going in with a straight sale, I'd probably get 2.5-3k discount for cash. Meaning that if I were to sell privately I'd need to get at least 27k for it - and that would only have me break even! So really I'd want at least 28-29k for it to make the hassle of dealing with DoneDeal'ers worthwhile.

TBH - I would take the path of least resistance. If you're looking at an R, get the best trade in price possible and go with that. You'll have 10-12 weeks then where you could casually try selling it yourself.

I'd only absolutely go down the DoneDeal route if I had to get rid of the car completely - to free up cash for example or if I was downgrading. In that scenario I'd also consider offering it to local VW dealers, they may have a customer or two in the market for a clean slightly used GTI / R.

Main reason I might change is to go back to an auto/dsg gearbox as finding that after 12 years of auto boxes the manual has lost its attraction. Reckon if I had got dsg initially I wouldn't be looking although extremely competent all rounder and all as the gti is, I haven't really fallen for it.
Had thought I would change to gti with dsg then an R came into mind as it's not much more.
Now I'm half interested in a bmw 330e plug in hybrid. With a good spec is cheaper than dsg gti with leather and has similar performance with theoretically better economy.
I may not bother at all as I'm always on the look out where cars are concerned.

VCDS afternoon.

Changed the coming home lights from the xenons to the fogs.
Added the fogs to the high beam.
Enabled the fan speed to show when ac set to auto

Tried and failed on the led inner brake lights, try again tomorrow.

Got 2 GTD Nogaro diamond cut alloys refurbed recently in Collins Engineering.

The first now had a minor curb mark that I did myself. I only got it done because the car was only a month old and it annoyed the hell out of me. He still had to redo the diamond cutting and lacquer the complete wheel. Overall it's a v good job. From a few feet away it's indistinguishable from the other 3. If you get a torch to it and go up close it's not quite as good as the OEM finish but overall a great job. The issue with these in the past has been longevity. So far a month in it's fine so time will tell.

In the meantime I managed to pick up a spare on eBay for €100. It was in horrific condition. Deeply kerbed, white worm, looked like crap. Sent it off up to them and got it back today. Again, from a few feet away it looks new. Quite impressive. If you look closely with a torch then the finish is not 100%, there are some fine scratches etc. But considering a new wheel from VW is over €800, I'm happy with this for €250 all in.

Overall I'd recommend them. If you're very OCD then yeah it's not as good as OEM, but for €125 vs €800 for a new one it's a no brainer for me. There are other places refurbing diamond cut alloys too and I don't have experience of them. Collins said they do them for one other crowd too. Im sure more people will do them as they seem to be on all new cars these days.

I've read / heard very good things about "Rim Solutions" too.

Diamond cut finish is a pain in the arse tbh, it was one of the main reasons I opted for the Pretorias on the R.

As I said, unless you're weird and go inspecting them very close up with artificial light they look pretty impressive.

Good stuff. The real test is how they'll hold up compared to the factory finish over time. Will they corrode faster etc.

Yeah exactly. I give them a clean and a wax every week. Even the factory ones are getting a bit scratched after only 3,000km so it will be interesting to compare.

There's a man on one of the other forums who had his MK5 GTI wheels all refurbed like that. I think it was Collins too. Anyway they all looked fantastic when refurbed but they went to sh1te with whiteworm corrosion within 12 months. Sure all you can do is keep an eye on them, apply sealant regularly (although I reckon this probably doesn't help much!)

Yeah I heard that. I think they supposedly improved the lacquer. Fingers crossed.

It's straightforward, but not free. The dealer will need to purchase an activation code from VW and they'll charge you an hour's labour to do the actual activation. Ballpark cost - 300 quid. You might be able to squeeze a discount out of them for it, especially as you're only collecting the new car... get the labour free of charge at the very least.
