The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

Insurance costs are the same. You may even find the new car (whether R or GTI) is cheaper to insure than your MK5.

Fuel is the only significant differentiator (34-35mpg versus 26-27mpg).
Road tax too - about 200 p/a more.

It really comes down to the deal you're offered overall as well. If it does only come down to ~70pm difference, then the R is definitely worth thinking about. I get you on the looks department bit, the GTI has a slightly more aggressive styling, which I personally like, but if you spec the R with Pretorias and in Lapiz Blue, then it's a stunning looking machine that is only really done justice in person as the pictures make it look far more bland than it actually is.

When I was pricing last year the difference for me between the GTI-P and the R ended up being about 6-7k on paper compared to both RRP's as then there is a much smaller gap which convolutes things, but my own scenario made my decision quite a bit easier to be honest. :P

I don't like the way they focus so much on the monthly payment amount. 70 euro per month is 2.5k. Then the final payment will also be a few €k more, not sure how much though.

Yeah but that's the way car buying has gone now.
In the U.S. Now most car ads give the monthly lease price not the rrp as virtually nobody buys cars over there for cash apparently.
Also if the R is more sought after and keeps a greater proportion of its value the difference between R and GTI narrows.
I don't know if they both depreciate the same. They certainly appear to be low depreciators compared to other cars( in Ireland at least, think UK is different).

Yeah technically you get 3 years free updates from there but I've not yet heard of a case where that 3 year freebie has expired for anyone.

The satnav in my car thought we were in Wolfsburg last night for about twenty minutes before correcting itself.
This morning it told me my key battery was low but then didn't repeat that warning again.
This evening it told me there was a stop/start fault. This message disappeared later.
Should I be worried?

Sounds like somethings up alright. Might be an idea to get it hooked up at the dealers to see if there is an issue.

Only issue I have with mine is the headunit needing a reboot every so often. I went weeks there without having to do it, and it happened again yesterday.

1. Common complaint with the Nav! The old RNS unit in my MK6 did that a lot. It might need a firmware update, but a bit like the common blank screen issue, a reboot should fix it.

2. Have you keyless? Keyless is very hard on the keyfob battery. I changed battery in the GTI key after about 16-17 months.

3. Stop start error, probably nothing much to worry about. Think I've seen that before too. An ignition cycle will fix it and you probably won't see it again for a long time if ever.

You can probably tell I work in software development, hence my ambivalence and acceptance that sometimes you just have to "reboot"

Car is due a service in 2k so will wait till then to get dealer to investigate unless something else crops up.
First issues I've had with the car at all. Was just thinking the other day how faultless it's been in fact.

Keyfob replacement is simple. Pick up a battery for about €2 in a chemist and pop it in. Could be a pain in the arse if it stops working and you don't have the spare near to hand. The car can be still be opened and started though - it's in the manual

Yeah I noticed the Vehicle health report is now online. It's pretty useless, but could/will be used to help prevent clocking cars. In a similar way cars serviced in the dealer network have their millage recorded, the health check records this too and keeps it in the big VW cloud.

Apparently, 0% finance is only for cars ordered and registered before the 31st of March. So you would have to take delivery before then.

0-100 in 7
And 30-60 in 2 seconds :eek:

10 years ago they were figures only exotic material could touch....now it's hot hatch territory.

Yeah its mental compared to what used to be considered supercar fast. All possible with a laptop too. Are you tempted?
Not sure I am, with warranty worry and it's not exactly slow now. I'd say a spin in a stage one would soon change my mind though.

No I'm not tempted at all, I think it's too much of a gamble when it comes to warranty.
In fairness the standard car is no slouch as it is, mine seems to be freeing up nicely too. Seems VW's claims of performance are fairly conservative, Dsg cars hitting 60 in 4.6 when tested.

Don't talk to me. I had to explain about app-connect numerous times. To the extent of telling them the order code.

To be honest I actually prefer the integration with the standard VW set up with the exception of spotify.
