The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

I would say it would be far better quality, plus you get to pick what type/colour/combo of leather or alcantara is used.

I was planning on doing this but I'm happy with the standard cloth/alcantara seats.

Yeah they missed a trick there. The mk6 R had them as an option.

Don't think they were available in the Mk6 either Neil. I've only ever seen them in Mk5 R32's.

VW don't do interior bling. The forthcoming "clubsport" is as blingy as it gets and really it's just the seats (which I'd be amazed if standard fit) that differ.

I remember reading many reports that those wingback seats look a lot better than they are to sit in. Not the most comfortable apparently and they do rob interior space too. I think side airbags are an issue with them too.

For what it's worth, I'm very happy with the standard leather quality. It was silly expensive for sure but I think it absolutely lifts the interior above the ordinary. I dab a bit of gliptone conditioner on the drivers seat every so often, they still look good as new... that stuff really brings them up well and refreshes the leather whiff

I've said it already, but the interior is really great. I love the alcantra and leather. A friend who drives a 5 series sat in yesterday and he was very impressed.

Did people run them in for the first 1k? I'm finding it difficult!

I've 1400km on mine, I kept below 5k rpm for about 800km but I was using full throttle up to 5k, lots of varying revs and engine braking.
I'm driving normally now, using all that's available, it only gets driven anyway hard once oil temp is above 95 degrees.

24000 kms on the r now. as neil says i always wait till the temp is up before driving it on but even after this mileage i still get the cheesy grin when it gets a lash.

MPG avg around 26.2 buy hey Petrol is cheap

Agree with the comments re interior - mine is just standard cloth/alacantra but i do think it needs leather to give it a sense of occasion.

my mrs has a new 5 series , its like getting into a Bentley after mine !

On my second car with that 184 engine, once it's warmed up it was driven on with both and never had an issue. The FR was driven harder than the VRS has been tbh and it drove a lot better as a result.

That's a big enough discount over 1.9% for those financing. I would love to know does the discount on retail price suffer a bit in reality to offset the 0% finance. They will never admit this if it does happen I would imagine.

Anyone tempted to change with the new 0% finance?

PS - I have keyless entry on my GTD. Using my wife's car today. Getting into the car and It wouldn't open, so had to press the button on the key in my pocket to open it. Got into the car, seatbelt on and went to start it - had to take the keys out and put them into the ignition. Went to drive off - had to take off the handbrake.

TLDR - I miss my Golf today

I think the importer takes the hit on the finance rates so presume dealer margins still the same.
Offer ends march 31st
Actually think the gti/d and R are good enough cars not to need this. Still sweet for current purchasers.

That wouldn't have been in Newbridge house by any chance would it? I was just leaving there on Sunday when a CSG GTI was going in.

Was actually in nenagh Tipperary where it happened.
Funnily enough came across another one this evening in limerick, a white gti reg number 132g81, looked good.
Both of us did a double take at each other's car at a roundabout.

That was my old GTI! I'd heard it sold to someone down Limerick direction alright. Good to hear it's still looking well!

Not at all no. It was registered on July 1st and 81 just happened to be what I got. 71 would have looked better... "G-71" = GTI

The way it is spaced, I thought the G is closer to 81 than 132 which makes it at a glance 132 G81

I think the reg plate may be new but can't be sure.
How come the gti badge is red? I thought they only introduced that in late 2014 for performance models?

Guys this thread has been both helpful and entertaining. I am hoping to order a GTI in the next week or so and as you guys all seem to be aware it apparently takes in the region of 12 weeks. That brings us out into late May timeframe.

My question is - Looking at your old plate number above @JoeA3 pretty good guess the car was registered in or around the 1st of July - maybe to get the 132 plate?

OK my real question is if I was holding onto the car for 3 or 4 years would it make any / much difference that a car were to be registered 161 V's 162 for trade-in purposes ?

Yep it was registered on July 1st.

In my opinion, after 3 or certainly after 4 years anyway, the 161 v 162 value differential would be negligible. If the car was arriving mid-late June I'd hold off. But if it's ready to go in May I'd nearly take it then.
