So 2 Seasons are going which imo is very sad to see and if rumor on the street is to be believed then Currys are not to far behind. I even heard talk the one beginning with A (with a whole lot of fuss getting them here in the first place) it is not supposed to be doing so well.

I know it's been said before but f••k me what is going to happen in the medium long term to O'Connell St? Our main st in town!
So we have what, Brodericks, Irish House, A-Wear, Pound Shop, Boots, Carl Scarpa, O'Connell Bros, Cavanaghs, First Active, plus Source and Abrakebabra which face it, all empty.....?!?

Where do we ever go from here?

Fingers crossed this is rock bottom. That it kick starts something or some change. Because another year of it and people won't even bother coming for a weekend to town and then that's the last real revenue stream gone.

What should happen is that in light of weak demand from customers, this should be reflected in falling commercial rents.

I hope that rents would fall by 50% to help shops reduce costs.

So, for example, the former Bistro Bianconi building on OCS, asking 60k pa or 5k pm, should be much less to rent.

That's assuming the landlords are sensible and reasonable.

I think that it actually suits some landlords not to let their properties for the following reasons.

1 - they don't want the hassle of chasing tenants for rent

2 - if they do not get the asking price that they think their property is worth I think it reflects on the value of their property overall which in turn could affect their loan to value rate. So it is in their benefit to ask for a crazy rent and risk leaving it idle.

To combat this the council should charge rates on retail premises that are vacant and you would find that the same landlords wouldn't be too slow about letting their premises for a realistic price.

The council should also employ a couple of lads/lassies to tidy up some of the vacant shopfronts that the owners let fall into disarray and then bill the owners for the work done because it is absolutely crazy to think that a person can own a premises in the centre of a town and have no obligation to keep it looking well

And it would not be a bad idea if the council were to give local businesses a rate break for the first year and maybe pay 25% in year two and 50% in year three, eventually paying the going rates and if and when profitable pay back the break the got for the first couple of years. I am sure other business owners wouldn't grumble too much about this as it would benefit them with more people coming to town to shop.
At the end of the day there are a lot of business/craft people doing great work in the county that would benefit from having a retail unit in town at an affordable price.

Anyone know anything about Tiger, passed it quickly yesterday and noticed it was in total darkness at lunchtime. Said it to someone else who said they saw a sign on the door but didn't read it.

The sign said something about it being closed, personal reasons perhaps? It said it would be open this afternoon which it was when I went past today.
