The store are referring to your consumer rights which are documented here:http://www.apple.com/ie/legal/statutory-warranty/ Claim period: 6 years from date of original sale. Worth noting: "Under Irish consumer law, any defect or non-conformity of goods with the contract which becomes apparent within 6 months of delivery are presumed to have existed at the time of delivery. After the expiry of this 6 month period, the burden to prove that the defect or non-conformity of goods with the contract existed on delivery generally shifts to the consumer."

Tempted, but £79 (about €101) seemed a little excessive, considering it's a manufacturing fault. I'll talk to Three and see what they say.

If they say a few days, then it's similar to my experience and is probably as good as it gets. If they mention 3rd party repair centres and a couple of weeks, I'd nearly pay the €79 and let Apple do it. Apple will give you a refurb phone rather than just a new camera, so you're getting practically a brand new handset for the money. That includes a new battery. It's not a bad deal.
iniall wrote: » Well I think (hope) Three are still obliged to fix the issue, which would mean sending it to Apple, but with Three paying the £75 instead of me. The big question for me is how long I'd be without the phone. It's a shame, given that it's apparently a manufacturing issue, that Apple don't pony up and repair all affected phones.

The genius said sure, they could do it in an hour, but it would cost £79. (The phone was bought in November 2014, so it's out of warranty.) The response was disappointing, but not entirely unexpected. She suggested I take it up with Three, as consumer protection requires them to cover faults that crop up in the the first two years. Has anyone done this? I assume Three will take the phone for a few weeks, which isn't really feasible.

waynegalway wrote: » Just an update: I got chatting to Apple Support just now, and they did a check.....turns out my local CompuB in Galway IS an iPhone service centre. I called the shop and they said they can handle it, usually a same-day service. They were aware of the issue and said it's a simple fix: the camera itself is fine, but there's a little disc around it that has slipped and it's just a matter of either realigning the disc or taking it out altogether. It will probably be next week before I get a chance to drop it in, but I'll update again afterwards.

smash wrote: » Good news from CompuB "We do in fact honour Apple recall issues for things like this." I'm going to call in over the weekend and see what they can do for me.
waynegalway wrote: » Is it an over the counter replacement there and then? I'd consider a spin to Belfast, but it would be waste of time if they just said "leave it with us and we'll get a new one couriered to you in a few days"
smash wrote: » ROI desperately needs an Apple store. I've emailed compub to ask them if they deal with recalls. You'd assume that being an Apple premium reseller they would, but my gut is telling me they wont.
