they are actually a really good little car. they feel as well built as you could expect and can take decent punishment, they are a practical layout with high seats and reasonable legroom and you get all the basics you want with electric windows, remote central locking etc.

those engines are apparently prone to head gasket failure but i think a bit of maintenance goes a long way, we've consistently had a Fiat with that engine in the family for at least the last ten years or more and there's been no hassle. that said, i think they are cheap to repair if they do go.

I had one, I really liked it. Never gave a days trouble and fine for city driving.

About as cheap as motoring gets.

Had one aswell, great car, nippy and economical (1.2) with great spec, pan roof etc, bought for peanuts and reliable as can be, (they seem to be going up in price ) as the 07 one I bought in 2013 seem to be getting the same money today!

Probably as rough as they come, but a new shape diesel S type with test (and 400k km) for about 1500 after haggling. You'd want to give it a serious going over but if (big if) there isn't much wrong the remaining few hundred could make it a very very nice cruiser for €2k or thereabouts

It's a shame it's not a 216 as those had a nice Honda engine. Still it's cheap motoring

People will disagree, and to an extent I nearly would but it is possible, they just need a lot of attention and maintenance. To me this is just part of the fun, and I would say that most people looking at a car like that would be in the same mind set. Realistically you need to be willing and able to go at the car with spanners

Okay so the badges are a bit gaudy and the test is a bit short, but ten months tax and you probably wouldn't get a 02 Golf GTi for the money. I'd want the number plates left on as part of the deal though

I know someone who used to run one of these as a daily. Lots of maintenance as you say and the underside wasn't long developing corrosion despite it being well cared for and garaged. I think they'd make a nice classic, Sunday, summer or events car if you have a good place to store it.

Being driven everyday of the year, especially on salted winter roads I'd say no they wouldn't make great bangernomics.

It's more than likely rusty underneath. Lots of rust is showing on the boot.

I drove one of these for about 18 months. Nice car, very evocative of a certain era, lots of admiring looks.

Downsides - get a Rimmer Bros catalogue - it eats parts
if you cant maintain it yourself prepare to spend a lot of time in garages, with the car off the road for months at a time

Upsides - the car is relatively quick, power to weight ratio is good
Easy-ish on petrol too
Cheap to tax - this one qualifies for vintage tax now.
Parts are cheap and easily available
You can go to vintage car shows

Get croppy boy over on projects to stick a Toyota engine or an mx5 engine and box in the triumph , and you'd have an interesting Daily

And no nct required pre 1980

I like it too, but it is simply too expensive / not old enough

Buy a mid 80s one for €1000 more, tax both for the year. After a year the older one is still worth about €800 more

so this one €1500 (purchase) + €700 (tax)- €1700 (final value if sold) => €500 spent on depreciation + tax
older one €2500 + €50 - €2500 => €50 spent on depreciation + tax :cool:

both will be similar in all the other costs...
