Electricity prices from main providers

A reminder to everyone that Electricity(and gas) fixed term contracts only last for 12 months. You need to ring up and renew the contract to continue to receive discounts. If you don't you will move to the standard rates which can cost you an unnecessary 10-20% extra on electricity and gas adding up to €200-€300 per year to your bill.

I did not include the likes of pinergy or prepaypower as they are outrageously expensive and you cannot negotiate any discounts from them. Please stay away from these rip off merchants.

I renewed two weeks ago with Electric Ireland as they were the cheapest for me with a night rate at the time. Since then there have been two price decreases from other suppliers and I'm sure there will be more price changes over the coming months so you will need to do your own research depending on what type of meter you have.

If there's anything to take away from this it's to make sure you get your 10-20% discount and sign up for a fixed term and always remember that you have to keep renewing it every 12 months, otherwise you lose your discount.

If you are on prepay gas or electricity, you pay the standing rate and cannot avail of any of the 15% to 20% discounts offered by all of the suppliers. I cannot advise people enough not to go on prepay. It is a crazy ripoff.

The suppliers normally charge a €50 early cancellation fee. Often times it's still worth signing up. This bill period I saved €65 euro, as an example. This was our main winter bill though.

Just to bump this thread as it's been 12 months.

You must renew your Electricity/Gas contract every 12 months to get the 18-22% discount. Savings could be in the hundreds per year.

Hi.

Just found out today house I am in the process of buying has a pre pay gas meter installed.

To convert the meter from pre pay to Bill pay costs €199.13. Vendor unwilling to do anything about it. Not impressed.

I signed the contract today, vendor will be signing next week, trouble is I signed before I found out they have a pre pay meter installed.

There's no point in letting the sale fall through because of this but it still maddens me to have to deal with pre pay meter rubbish.

This is unfortunate. It's not going to be worthwhile cancelling your purchase of a house for €199.13.

You'll save that 199.13 within around a year because of the discounts you'll receive.

The pre pay companies are a plague.

Doesn't work like that. I will initially have to go pre pay in order to open the account and have a gas supply with my current provider, bord gais.

I will then have to request the meter is converted from pre pay to bill pay, this will have to be done by gas networks Ireland and costs €199.13 to get done. Only then can I go bill pay again.

Unfortunately all the providers will charge the same amount as it's GNI that have to come and change it. Electricity meters on the other hand can just be deactivated.
It may be worth contacting GNI directly though to see if there's anything they can do
