Let's (re)learn Irish!

Following on from the recent Irish language threads, I spent some time Googling last night, and found that, fairly quickly, much of my Irish vocabulary came back (though I still didn't have a clue what was going on with most sentences' grammar).

It really brought home to me just how much Irish is in my head somewhere, albeit buried deep, from spending 14 or so years learning the subject.

Rather than relying on elitist Gaelgor hipsters, or those circle-jerking miseryguts poets in Aosdána*, I was thinking that we might learn Irish together, and use this thread to share links to places online with clear explanations of how to learn Irish, and also post useful vocabulary; we might even coin a few ourselves (if vegetarian is feoilséantóir, or 'meat-shunner', why not?).

Some essential curses:

Magairlí (testicles, this is the word Bill Cullen actually should have used instead of liathróidí (balls))
Cac (shít)
Buinneach (diarrhoea, in cursing terms it's a good alternative to "cac" when you want to say shít)

Duolingo offers Irish as an option, the pronunciation is terrible though.

It's hit and miss, though the team behind the course are getting another (native) speaker to re-record some of the pronunciation so it should be improved somewhat in the not-too-distant future.

Overall Duolingo's a great resource for language-learning, won't make you fluent but gives a very good platform to start from. And it's all free!

You'd think that with the amount of money we spend on the language that the Department of the Gaetacht and Heritage would have created a free online learning program - it's the very least they could do.

OP, you should listen to the numerous raidió stations as gaeilge, scairt ar TG4.tv is maybe get a nice gaeilgeoir cailín. The latter is always the best way to foghlaim teanga (tsk tsk) new.

We already have 2 threads either on the front page of AH or very close to it regarding Irish so I don't think we need another one. There's the Gaeilge forum here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=31 which can accomodate Irish learners.

There's also Teach na nGealt which is an Irish-language only forum http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=904

Remember to read their charters before posting there.
