changing colour of fluorescent lamp fitting

i have got a 40watt circular fluorescent ceiling light in the living room. I am happy with the look of the fitting and amount of light it throws out but its the colour rendering. even though the shop assistant said it was a Warm white tube in it and its got 2200k printed on the tube itself I still find it a white bright crisp light. Its got a frosted plastic diffuser on it, I was thinking of maybe putting some kind of film/filter in the shade but has anyone got any other ideas apart from changing it for another fitting? - can you get even warmer tubes than 2200k? - also its got a electronic ballast, would it be able to be hooked up to a dimmer switch does anyone think?

I have another floor lap in the room a 150w halogen lamp with dimmer and if i put that on the same time as the fluorescent its amazing how much 'whiter' the fluorescent light is - I would like to get them both near on matching the colour of the halogen floor lamp

Colour rendering (80) and colour temperature of fluorescent lights (6000°K) and their high frequency hum is dreadful. I replace them for LEDs/incandescents with extreme prejudice.

You could always use a filter.

Thanks stoner - isnt 4000k even cooler brighter white than the one thats in there already though which has 2200k stamped on the tube?

You are correct, sorry I was matching the wrong way around my head was not screwed on.

830 warm white . Osram are good lamps and usually follow their colour charts.
, I'll get you a chart now and you can make your mind up. 827,930 or 830 are the warm lamps. A 827 or 830 can vary from one brand to another. As sir liamalot says the rendering of these lamps although marked as 8 (80) is not great sometimes so a good lamp is necessary. I can't find a 930 or 927 (these would be rendering scores between 90 and 99) for this type of lamp. Matching the Temp (k) but not the rendering number between light sources can create funny results sometimes, I've seen the 827 lamps look a bit pink when mixed.

Thanks for the info. 830 is 3000k and the tube thats already in the fitting is 2200k and thats too white not warm white its stamped on the tube as 2200k. - unless of course, because as also stamped on the tube is also 'made in china' so maybe their 2200k is different from osram's colour temperature! :-)

I'd say that could an issue alright. Osram and Philips make decent lamps. The chart I sent you is from an osram pdf called white is white is white and is written around this issue

2200 as you say should be warm not "white" but it can be very difficult to match some lamps even within brands.
The issue can be shading and a relative perception. We've even changed all the lamps in buildings that mixed philips 26W 830 PLS and Philips 830 55W T5 they still looked out and they settle in at different rates too .

You could also consider that other lamp might be too yellow. For example, ever notice how some things you think are white look yellow in the snow.

I've talked around it enough all I can say is that I'd get a lamp from a decent manufacturer that I checked the colour scale on and I'd get the rendering level as high as possible.

The lamp level chart I sent you matches the osram lamp I linked you too.

Brilliant thanks for all your help stoner - really appreciate it. having more thoughts about it now I might end up putting good ol dependable tungsten back into the living room and transfer this fluorescent fitting to the bathroom or kitchen instead now
