Dairy Chit Chat- Please read Mod note in post #1

Recently we saw three posters close their accounts over disagreements in the dairy threads. While there is a lot of frustration and discontent with current milk prices and the processing industry, the recent tendency for dairy threads to become tit-for-tat arguments isn’t tolerable for those not involved.

All farming sectors go through difficult periods and during such times there may need to be changes in how threads are moderated.

Dairy threads are going to be more closely monitored and subject to stricter moderation for a while.

To that end we won’t tolerate baiting of posters, constantly reviving old arguments, posters with agendas or crusading for a cause.

Whether it’s discussion of the business or politics of the dairy or other sectors, we expect civility and tolerance toward each other and other opinions as diversity of opinion is needed as a source of different ways of looking at a situation.

Also please be aware that what you may post as light-hearted banter can be read totally differently by someone adversely affected by the subject matter and evoke a reaction you hadn’t intended.

Very true, I couldn't believe what guys are paying for He calves.

3 wks ai here next spring and all He Bulls from there. I'd go all Bulls from the start only there would be chaos.

Plan is to go all cows on all ground with no young stock kept at all. They're costing way too much to rear. Lovely simple system

Hey guys I've got an anonymous question if you wouldn't mind putting it up? So there's a fairly good chance we are going to have to sell up this season and I'm wondering what people's feelings on the dairy cattle market is atm. I've got straight jerseys, BW 145/45 and PW 145/70, averaging 1.9ms in the November herd test (on a grass only diet) and scc average of around 90 ..... What would you market them for? What would YOU pay for them lol?? Are many herds selling this year? And what would you charge for R1 & R2 straight jersey daughters of these cows with even higher bw/pw ðŸ˜¬ sorry for the long question! Cheers team

I own and run Canterbury Livestock Ltd based in Ashburton very interesting reading your comments depending if you are in South or North but in the South Island most dairy farmers are down 10-15 % on numbers and they are still dropping numbers because of dry and finance reasons
There will not be a lot of herds getting sold
as one line there will be a lot of top ups
We are signing incalf freisain xbred heifers up for $1500-$1600 top line the other day was signed up for $1720 with BWs 180
Herds - good low in put herds doing 400-450 kgs still going to bring $1700-$1800 with good records
We got a line of 1100 2rd calvers on market for
$1950-$2000 people are showing a lot of interest
So for you Jersey herd its finding the buyers wanting Jerseys but they are normally $100-$200 below freisain herds

Looks like a nice herd of cows on the way out although no talk of herd size. Prices being thrown around also look to be 20% shy of the bumper 2013 season that's for sure.

Talking in the pub last night and people off loading culls left right and centre, some even drying off first year milkers etc. These are on farms with pivot irrigation and all those bells and whistles.

Rain moving in here at the mountains but the plains won't get much relief at all.

Issue with transfer of entitlements here, so no payment yet. Finally got to talk to someone that should know yesterday and they're saying it will probably be Jan before payment but they are working to get them done for Christmas.

LWR's sire is abo so no good there on abo stock. Some of the new proofs are up so you can check them against the catalogue only for ones with calving recorded first I think. The bull search facility won't be updated till the 21st tho

What the journal doesn't point out is that supplementation became necessary when land prices rose, in order to make the figures stack up.

As I have been repeating ad nauseam for years, if grass only production is a risk free profit maker in any market, the price of grass (i e land) will increase until it isn't.

In a relatively fluid land market like NZ I suspect this will have been a significant factor.

Are you in the disease screening scheme in Glanbia? If you are , jiust wondering if anything ever showed up for salmonella? I got a positive on it during the summer and I vaccinated everything for it. Both tests since the positive one have been negative

I have to agree, great organisation and all, but I've tried to offer an animal more than once about 5 yrs ago, and they never followed up my offers. Unusual

I'm surprised at thst. Few yrs ago it was mad with up to a 100 going over each yr. Hear v little about it the last few yrs
