The Restaurant Recommendation Thread

There's been a crazy number of threads recently looking for restaurant recommendations, so I'd like to start a specific thread for it. Please post below about your favourite restaurants - why you like them, what price range they are, what type of food they serve, if they have an early bird, opening hours if you know them, where they're located. If you could include a link to the website, that would be great. The more details, the better. This is not a thread to post negative reviews - there's a thread in the main Food & Drink forum for that if you like. Basically, I want this thread to be full of recommendations, not positive and negative reviews. That being said, you can disagree with a recommendation briefly if you really feel the need to, but you must have a really valid reason such as an awful experience, rather than "I don't really like the food" or "It's too expensive".

Balmed Out

Not fond of meatballs so much but will have to try it out over the festive period. Hopefully others will too. When I look at a menu I dont just look for what sounds nicest but also what ive never had and I think a lot of people are like that. Good to see something starting thats a bit different.

Found out earlier its my neighbours niece is the owner. Menu looks really good value, pick your meatball, pick your sauce and pick your side (pasta, potato, salad) all for €10.

Love Italian food so will be trying this. That spot is a bit of a graveyard for restaurants though so hopefully it goes well.

AH, one of the deserts is the "Ballteaster Cheesecake". I can see what they are doing there, but i wonder if they thought through the name entirely...

I like it. Good value, you get a big feed for a decent price. Some of the people in there can't wrap the burritos that well, unfortunately, so sometimes it might be a bit messy. But overall, good.

Tried the new meatballs place where Huguenots was yesterday. I didn't have high hopes as I believe it was the first day it opened but it was really fantastic and I can see it doing well.

The decor is lovely, very warm and inviting. I had the standard beef meatballs with tomato sauce and spaghetti. The only word to describe it was amazing. It was obvious the dish was made with fresh, high quality ingredients and it shows how something so simple and basic can be great when executed properly. It was a nice sized portion, I sometimes find restaurants serve huge portions of pasta but they got it just right.

My boyfriend had the salmon meatballs with pesto sauce and spaghetti and he devoured it. We shared a portion of creamed mash which was also delicious.

For dessert, I had the ballteaser cheesecake which was one of the best I've had and he had the rice pudding, which he also thought was fantastic.

In all, we got two main courses, a side dish, two desserts, two glasses of wine, two minerals and two coffees for about €55. Absolutely fantastic value for money and we'll certainly be returning.

Service was a bit on the slow side but obviously no complaints there - its their opening week and that'll fix itself in time. Staff were lovely, and very attentive, maybe a bit too much so but I'd rather they be over eager than uninterested.

Was chatting to the owner whilst paying and he seemed like a gent and was very passionate about the place.

Would love to see the place do well, I'd highly recommend it. Perfect example of simple food done properly. Will most definitely be returning and I can see it being a regular spot for a mid week casual dinner.

Popped into updown. Nice midrange spot. They were out of a couple of things on the menu. We were eating late on a busy night and I prefer running out of things than digging into the freezer and microwave.

There were a bunch of us, but the starters that I remember were the very tasty cheese soufflé, and a great antipasti plate with loads of tasty bits on it. Mains, I had crispy salmon, others had the pork belly and steak. All of us were happy with those. Desserts, the chocolate orange dome was like a light fluffy Terry's chocolate orange on a plate. Pistachio semifreddo was beautiful on the plate and delicious. Wine was on a tap system, which made it very reasonably priced for drinkable stuff. I think it was 23 or 25 euro for a bottle.

Service was lovely and friendly, food was maybe smidge slow in coming out, but nothing crazy. Don't mind that on a night out if the food is good anyway.

I think for the group of 4, including 2 on tap bottles of wine it came to 110 euro. That had a 20% discount on it, one of our group had picked up a discount from somewhere.

Dont think its been mentioned... If you fancy a burger, Burger Shack on S. Main St is excellent. No frills, €5 a burger.

Anyone have recommendations for somewhere to eat before heading to the Opera House? We want to stay somewhere pretty close just in case it's raining or in case we're running late.
We were at Zamora lately so we want to try somewhere else. I was thinking maybe Drake's or Updown? I don't know much about them really and can't see Drake's menu on their website. Can't think of where else is nearby, so any help would be appreciated.

Oh I can definitely recommend Drake's.Ate there twice recently for the first time ever.So nice!

It was 21 euro for 3 courses and everything was home made.Huge selection of food so there will be something to suit everyone.

I went to Salt for tapas recently and I'm not sure I'd be back. The staff are very friendly, but for a place that doesn't take bookings, it's kind of a risk to go there because there isn't much else around that area if they are too busy. The table we got was quite cramped for 3 of us, although we shared all the dishes so it didn't matter too much. It came to just shy of €100 for 6 or 7 plates plus a bottle of wine. To me, that's a little on the steep side for tapas. Just taking the cheese and meat plate for €14.50 - you get almost double the amount of food in spots like Bar Pigalle, and the quality is just as good.

Was in Orso for lunch today. First time going for lunch, been for dinner a few times. Was fab! Had the pitta bread with hummus and 2 salads. The portion is huge and very tasty. Only €6.50 too. Very good value. I want to try their breakfast next!

Thanks for the recommendations. We've been to Coqbull already, and my friend isn't a fan of Luigi Malone's (I've never been) so I think we might try Drake's. Any night I've walked past there has been a decent crowd inside and that is usually a good sign.

If you don't go with Drakes, I'd highly recommend The Meatball Place on Carey's Lane. I had another fantastic meal in there this evening. Its fantastic value for money and great food!

Not sure to be honest. They definitely seem to be open long hours though. Damn good burgers.
