Dairy Chit Chat- Please read Mod note in post #1

Recently we saw three posters close their accounts over disagreements in the dairy threads. While there is a lot of frustration and discontent with current milk prices and the processing industry, the recent tendency for dairy threads to become tit-for-tat arguments isn’t tolerable for those not involved.

All farming sectors go through difficult periods and during such times there may need to be changes in how threads are moderated.

Dairy threads are going to be more closely monitored and subject to stricter moderation for a while.

To that end we won’t tolerate baiting of posters, constantly reviving old arguments, posters with agendas or crusading for a cause.

Whether it’s discussion of the business or politics of the dairy or other sectors, we expect civility and tolerance toward each other and other opinions as diversity of opinion is needed as a source of different ways of looking at a situation.

Also please be aware that what you may post as light-hearted banter can be read totally differently by someone adversely affected by the subject matter and evoke a reaction you hadn’t intended.

I'd need a meal shed, new low fill bin, feeder to mix it, and loader to fill the bin and feeder! Also extra work but better feed

Final scanning today of the late spring calvers. Fcuk me the bull was busy tail end of the breeding season, but saved the bacon of several cows ha! Anyway only 10empties in total , 6 of whom I want to cull, (about 5 others I want to cull also, but bull did the job on them ha), but biggest issue is the spread:

Feb 38
March 20
April 22
May 1
June 5

I'll probably go again with the 4 empties, these will be my only autumn calving cows next year (28 calving after April will easily fill the liquid quota), going to be hard to pull back many of them 28cows to March, but will try hard, will prb cut off breeding next year to avoid anything after 3rd week of April, a week a year about all I can do. Breeding has been the one torn in my side on the farm, I've struggling to make much impact on the spring calving spread, time to throw away the coils, estrumate etc etc, and get very ruthless, if a cow can't go incalf within the window she is gone.

The feeders are a no brainer but its the bin is the issue, once it goes in you tied to the merchant with a blower.my suggestion is to have a bin that can be filled with a loader in a house with the feeds init loader dosent leave the house and bin feeds the feeders.having said all that its the labour becomes the issue but then the debate becomes cheap straights versus renting land

I'm about to build a bin for the parlour and thinking of using a spare set of parlour augurs I have kicking around to lift from a hopper at ground level up into the bin. Can fill the hopper from loader or bag.

It won't be possible to blow into the bin for reasons of architectural merit.

Probably nuts at this stage but would be nice to keep the options open.

We're planning to build the bin ourselves as it's going in a bit of an odd position and apart from anything else will be too high for our old loader to reach comfortably (we have a high concrete apron around the parlour).

As we have spare augurs the idea occurred to us to have a hopper lower down and load / empty a bag into there, it's a small amount of feed and since we're actually going to integrate the bin inside a sort of building whether it will be fit to blow into at all is a bit doubtful.

Haven't really come up with a plan yet as other things more pressing.

I think it's bad enough owing less than that on land. Couldn't face it if it was for a bloody parlour

Job for your accountant.....they increase in value quiet nicely while you have stock relief, and may tumble in value due to unforeseen circumstances at a later stage...

Do you know the way sometimes you see a building on th farmers journal and you go that makes no sencewell the other day I met a young fella with a good job who is taking over the farm at home and he was telling me that when you allow that he will qualify for 60 %grant and the fact he is in the high tax bracket basically means it will only cost him 20 % of the build, puts adifferent slant on things

Know what you mean, but in my experience anyway the guys who justify ex excessive spending on tax grounds often don't stay too long in the high bracket...

That's a figure you need to be careful with. I'd suggest that be be decided between you and your accountant. Your long term plan, stock relief etc has a big bearing on that figure

Dry her off or treat and dry off?

A heifer calved 4 wks with scc of 1.4 mil. Tested her with cmt and nothing showed up. She has a bit of swelling on one quarter which could be causing?

if it were me id dry her off ta feck. sample and get tested if you had the patience. your hardly stuck for the milk

what is your scc. I have had a problem here for a while, got rid of the highest scc cow every month for a few months and its under 150 now.

At 1.7 m SCC and 6 lactation it'll be v hard if not impossible .out the gate so she won't infect some other cow

Recent infection so. If she was mine I'd treat her and dry her off now if no other issues with her.

Find the quarter treat it then cepravin and a good long dry period. Worked on a few for me last year
