Recently we saw three posters close their accounts over disagreements in the dairy threads. While there is a lot of frustration and discontent with current milk prices and the processing industry, the recent tendency for dairy threads to become tit-for-tat arguments isn’t tolerable for those not involved.

All farming sectors go through difficult periods and during such times there may need to be changes in how threads are moderated.

Dairy threads are going to be more closely monitored and subject to stricter moderation for a while.

To that end we won’t tolerate baiting of posters, constantly reviving old arguments, posters with agendas or crusading for a cause.

Whether it’s discussion of the business or politics of the dairy or other sectors, we expect civility and tolerance toward each other and other opinions as diversity of opinion is needed as a source of different ways of looking at a situation.

Also please be aware that what you may post as light-hearted banter can be read totally differently by someone adversely affected by the subject matter and evoke a reaction you hadn’t intended.

18.5 l at 4.03p and 4.87 fat cows on 2kg of 13% beef nut and 2 kg of silage all spring calvers

2.5 kgs of 16% nuts

cows are now fields that were only grazed only by sheep all year

old pasture but certainly shows the benefits of the "white vermin"

back up to 17.6 ltrs 3.71pr 3.89 bf ,now on 2 kgs of 14% ,after group meeting was only 1 on no meal ,they were dropping like mad ,down to 13 ltrs so enough was enough.

straight out no, i have been the lowest in my group all year, still going into heavy covers ,we hit 3.83 pr and 4.05 fat on new grass seeds 2 weeks ago,so the heifers are telling me they need lighter covers, i made the choice of not taking out paddocks this week as recovery been the main factor, and would only end up feeding them in 3-4 weeks time and still have to pay the contractor, it may be a mistake ,what do you think.

What's your sr? What's sort of covers are they going into.
Doing a farm cover would really tell you if you have too much.
More cows next yr to eat thus grass?

Firstly your starting out, once your own replacements come on the ground youl see more of sn improvement! Grass management and deficit feeding will improve with experience also. I wouldnt pull back meal this time of the year myself

They are cleaning out paddocks after the cows, about a week to 10 dyas before calving they go to calving paddock which is bare and they get a bale of silage every other day

Bare paddock getting silage. Helping me build covers without having to spread fert. Don't like them hoingoing behind cows because they eat regrowths.

Have them following cows after paddocks with strong covers or to bare down odd paddock that cant be mown but generally move them to ground not currently part of milking platform with old grass in it. They do alright without putting on too much condition. Make sure they are done for flies anyway. If things get tight dry paddock with silage but don't like em going at round feeders as they would do a bit of belting I find as too many in group initially

have them cleaning out sections of rough paddocks that the milkers wouldn't clean out, with a Bale of hay also. Springing down now, will be keeping them close to the house. Not enough of them to follow the cows, and they only be eating the regrowth, they are in plenty good enough condition anyways also.

How did you get on with the bird bia- had a lad here today that said he had the legs walked off him in co Louth yesterday- I didn't pass as a fly strip missing on one door and a hole in wall

ok, small problem with paperwork, the lady from Glanbia will come back and check on it. Also commented on swallows nest in milking parlour cobwebs on inside of roof. Milking parlour is an old stable and theres no way i am going up to get cobwebs down from there.He was just over 3 hours here.

was there an issue with the withdrawal period of cepravin dry cow tubes, says 4 days on the box but thought i read here it was taking a week to clear in some cases?

There was I think, did they make the dry period longer at 54days than it was previously to fix it? I used cephlaxin (spelling?) It has a withdrawal of 35 days + 1 I think. Dear at 8 something a cow off vets but was the best stuff there for cows calving in 40 days

anyone know much about ferdia, is it a spin off from fresh milk producers? got a phone call this morning talking about some sort of group scheme saving on esb. anyone else approached or know any more,

I had the fert, I was in about something else, just have ton & 1/2 to spread after the cows. ( he can be a bit of a know it all)

Ferdia is a co op set up many years ago by leinster milk producers, now fmp to have an avenue to buy milk if necessary
It was never going to have the facilities
A few years ago shares were issued to new members of fmp that previously hadnt any
Yes theyve negoiated a decent deal with electric Ireland

Cephaguard was tge name of the stuff. It's cefquinome sulphate. With drawl is 1 day when dry period is 5 weeks or more
