Do you like the clinical look to your kitchen like the one below,or are you more the farmhouse type with the muddy shoes in the corner?
If you live in a flat I suppose the clinical type is more appropriate but hard to warm to imo.

Totally rustic and muddy shoes in the corner! And traipsed through, and cats on the counter tops when they're not allowed, dogs watching dinner being eaten, my kitchen at home was always the busiest room in the house, that's where everyone hung out and talked and argued and played games and listen to music - you only went into the sitting room to the TV for a bit of peace!
