France train shooting: Three hurt and man arrested

An armed man has injured three people on a train between Amsterdam and Paris before being overpowered by two American passengers, officials say.
The incident happened on the high-speed Thalys service near Arras, and the attacker was arrested at Arras station.
Two of the victims, said to be an American and a Briton, were seriously injured, reports said.
The man arrested was a 26-year-old Moroccan. Anti-terrorist officers have taken over the case.
The weapons were said to include a Kalashnikov, a knife, an automatic pistol and cartridges.
One of the two people seriously hurt had a gunshot wound, the other a knife wound.

French media said the men who overpowered the suspect were US Marines.
The UK Foreign Office said it was aware of the reports of shots being fired and that was in touch with French authorities, urgently seeking information.
Images shared on social media appeared to show a man being restrained on the station platform in Arras.
"The situation is under control, the travellers are safe. The train stopped and the emergency services are on site," the Thalys official Twitter account tweeted.
Thalys said several trains had been delayed in the wake of the attack.
France has been on edge since the attack on the Charlie Hebdo magazine and a Jewish supermarket in Paris in January, which left 17 people dead.
And in June a man said to be inspired by the Islamic State group beheaded his boss and tried to blow up a gas plant in southern France.

French TV is saying that railway staff thought the suspects behaviour was suspicious and were getting worried when he locked himself in the bathroom so requested help. Luckily the US marines were there. Chilling stuff. The French could have another massacre on their hands if it were not for the on the ball railway workers and the two marines.

These guys are absolute heroes. It's horrific to imagine what could have been the outcome if they weren't on board. I'm delighted too to see they gave this scumbag a good few belts of his own weapon, just a pity they didn't finish him off.

The rise in these lone wolf style attacks is scary though and I think it's completely justified at this stage to view all Muslims with suspicion. Might not be fair but only by doing this will potential attacks like this be foiled.

I live in Dublin. I have only ever been attacked by, in fights with, almost mugged by, Dublin people. Do I go to the shops later with me back to the wall all the way down the road?

There is a huge difference between getting punched or mugged and somebody out to commit an act of mass murder.

I am as far removed from politically correct as you could hope to be, yet I would view this with some skepticism. The truth is, there has been a constant flow of migrants from the Arab Sprig regions since what, 2011 or so. Western media has a habit of over hyping these type of threats. Around 9/11 or maybe even before it there were reports of literally hundreds of Afghanistan trained sleepers resident in the US and Canada. 15 years later and only a fraction of those arrested in the US and Canada since then underwent training in Afghanistan pre 9/11.

It's not tarring when all of these recent attacks share one common denominator - the religion of the people responsible. We can continue to be all PC and more of these attacks will continue, or we can wake up to the fact that this religion is completely incompatible with western values and societies and has followers who are willing to carry out mass murders.

I'm guessing that the muggers who attack you were dressed in certain attire.

I'm guessing you would be more wary walking past a group of young men wearing similar attire in a dimly lit area than you would passing a group of young men wearing Abercrombie and Fitch in the middle of Dalkey.

Similarly I think it is more prudent for authorities to frisk burqa wearing women then it is to frisk 90 yer old European women.

I don't blame the Brits for looking at the Irish with suspicion, I would have done the same. It was the Irish carrying out the attacks not the Chinese! It's common bloody sense!

That is the only acceptable immigration policy. We should only allow educated skilled people in that can contribute to our economy. That and a small number of genuine refugees (no economic migrants).

Not a logical comparison. The republican movement was in reaction to an occupation by a foreign force in their home country. Islam as a religion, dictates core tenets that instructs them to subvert, subdue and murder the "infidels" or non believers. It is not compatible with any modern society on any level.

When you are in your early 20's and you approach the door of a nightclub that caters to an older crowd you will likely either be refused admission or given the 3rd degree on the door, on the basis that the behavior of you and your friends may not be in keeping with the maturity of the clientele.

When looking for property I, and pretty much anyone else who has tried to rent in their 20's, has been told that by landlords that they will call you back, because they are hoping that rather than rent a potential party house drug den to you and your friends they will have some older financially stable couple/ family to view later on and take the place for what they assume will be a more hassle free tenancy.

I've lost count of the amount of times at airports I've been pulled over for additional bag checking/ swabbing while young families and the elderly swan through without a bother.

In short, I've dealt with profiling and pre judging all my life. But because I'm not dark skinned or follow a non christian religion I don't have a lobby of limp wristed social justice warriors to Cry and bitch and scream wascist wascist on my behalf.

There is more than one sect within Islam. Not all or even a large minority of muslims believe that interprtation. The biggest victims of Islamic extremism are other muslims considered the "wrong type of muslim" by the extremists.

We should not conflate the two. Legal non EU migrants played by the rules, met the criteria set out by the government, found a sponsor and came via a work permit in a field where there is a skills shortage or to fill a position where no EU citizens where available. EU member states will need hundreds of thousands of such people, every year, to plug gaps in the labour market.

Migrants whose first act is to illegally enter the country, not so much. If we needed them then they would qualify for a work permit.

It is unfair on the former to group them together with the latter.

I find no definition that matches that. Some would say that's what a "SJW" effectively does, but certainly its not an implication or meaning that's associated with "limp wristed"

I have worked and dealt with a lot of Muslims, from various parts of the globe and have never met a bad one. They were all unbelievably friendly people. I often wonder whether those that spit vitriol at the have actually ever met one. You hear more news stories about black people killing people than you do about Muslims and yet you wouldn't hear sane people saying, "all black people are killers, we should wipe them out". And yet you hear this about Muslims more often than not.

I think you will see more and more of these attacks as more and more muslim migrants come to europe. I think these people are very frustrated when they come to europe and dont get what they want. Its crazy to keep taking these people in

It's not really funny at all boney, you're just normal like any other rationale, intelligent, tolerant and broad minded person. Those who subscribe to exaggerated fear mongering and ignorance can't relate to this and they're always the ones that shout the loudest. But like any tantrum throwing child, it's always best to ignore them.

Yes, yes. You are such an enlightened soul. If you were a bar of chocolate, you would eat yourself. Muslim immigration into Europe is going swimmingly well, isn't it? It is not like they are overly represented in prison and the dole offices across the continent. It's not like up to ten thousand of them have joined ISIS. It is not like they are shooting up cartoonists for drawing their prophet. Or Jews on their way to a synagogue....

Anyone with serious concern about Islamic terrorism, continued Muslim immigration and what the future holds for us is obviously irrational, uneducated and intolerant. Sure didn't bogman meet a few in the sticks and weren't they grand lads altogether?
