You would have to know the level of crime in the US in the same period in a scenario where they hadn't put half the country in prison.

Then compare the two levels of crime. From that comparison you could extrapolate the effectiveness of prison.

Animals do feel pain and will react accordingly (I had to put iodine on a royal python with scale rot, Stimmy definitely didn't appreciate it and her body tensed as soon as the iodine touched her, I had my mother holding her tail whilst I held her body to stop her from curling into a ball)

And apparently the dog "was attacked sometime over Friday or Saturday". Uh, why do you not know where you dog is? Why can you not say, "The dog went missing on Friday night and was found the next day"?

Because there's a good chance this family allowed the dog to roam free on the streets.

Far more likely that this dog was off wandering around and some mentally ill neighbour who was sick of stray dogs crapping in his garden decided to do something drastic.

Doesn't make it any less horrific, but obviously less sensationalist than the idea that there are roaming gangs of murderous teenagers snatching dogs from peoples' homes.

Did you read what they did to the dog? Can you imagine the pain of what happened to him? Just really focus on what happened and don't just treat it as "a dog being killed" because that's not what happened.

I don't agree with killing the guys that did it but if caught, what tangible punishment will they get?

I'd wager a slap on the wrist because someone will argue that they have had a complicated past depending on their possible social status or home life.

I'd be in favour of serious hard labour in the public domain for an extended amount of time. No state aid of any sort for 10 years and maybe even chopping a hand off.

While I don't think that it's more likely that a mentally ill neighbour snatched the dog the wording of the article ('cornered the dog') does seem to indicate that he was on the streets rather than in his own garden.

Acts of violence against animals has increased over the years. I remember a while back the news reported a slaughter of horses on a beach. Humans can be despicable towards the animal kingdom. Pet holders and other animal holders should be vetted before being allowed to care for animals.

I'm sure people are familiar with an knack very common among kids. Using a magnifying glass to use the sun to burn small insects. While young and innocent your know no better and fascinated with learning a neat trick. This cruel behaviour only stunts your ability to empathise with the creatures you handling, only from them do you turn on larger animals to inflict pain on them. This is the stage that kids should be aware of the diversity of life and that treating them with cruelty is a bad reflection of their character.

I disagree. Animal cruelty has been round all the time. It's just better reported now.

I lost count of the amount of bags of drowned kittens and puppies I discovered in my youth when fishing.

Because when a thread is launched in hysteria like "sterilise them all, execute them, break their legs", pointing out that before the mob executes them they may have a defence eg. they could not form the intent, is very very rational. Of course the same analysis may lead to your conclusion, that they are sadistic scumbags. But if you prefer hysteria over careful consideration, that is your prerogative.

It's nothing about hysteria, I just don't believe that anything can count as a valid defender in a case like this. Mentally ill or not, these scumbags should not be allowed to live among decent society which does not want to tolerate this kind of crap. Why it happened is entirely irrelevant - it happened, and if we don't want it to happen again, those who did it must lose at least some of their freedom.

Besides the dog that was killed, another six week old dog was hung a few weeks back in balinderry park mayfield, the same park where the fire brigade was stoned recently.
Another neighbour has his cat stolen and then tied to a tree while the kids went to get their whippet dogs, thankfully one kid saved the kitten and returned it.

There are no cats nor kittens left as all killed , or had dogs set upon them.
Another kid was mugged and had his phone and wallet taken of him at knife point, but who care when the cops have peaceful water protesters to follow around in droves instead.

So in other words, it's yet another community which has been totally let down by law enforcement and/or the courts system. Areas with problems like this should have regular patrols - whatever happened to "walking the beat"?
