The Saverio Bellante Trial: Italian Man Killed Landlord and Then Ate His Heart.

Surprisingly, I haven't seen a thread on this yet so I thought I'd start one.

Italian Lodger Saverio Belante has pleaded not guilty by way of insanity to murdering and eating the heart of his Landlord after a heated game of chess.

Belante allegedly thought he was god when he murdered victim Tom O'Gorman.

Tom O'Gorman was a religous affairs writer and a member of the Iona Institute.

Personally, I never had much interest in the Iona Institute or what they do but what I know about them most was that a lot of people on boards have an intense dislike of them (to say the least). So I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread on the topic already. Or maybe there is but I haven't seen it.

People using this thread as a round about method of iona bashing need to have a little word with themselves. As for Bellante, if he is so disturbed that, lets say he forgot to take his meds for a couple of days (easily done), he will quite possibly commit a gruesome murder....then I'm sorry, he needs to be detained.

Who has done that? I've just reread the thread and there hand been a single criticism of either the victim or the Iona Institute except one person who said "just because he worked for the Iona Institute didn't mean he deserved this" (paraphrased) so what are you referring to?

Yes that is true,which only gives greater credence to the view being explored by Pretty Fast.Suicide Circus was not disputing the fact that his medication was withdrawn,merely highlighting the danger that individuals such as Mr.Bellante possess in general.What's to stop people with such disorders deciding they wish to stop there medication and drop of the radar totally?
Personally I think such individuals should be detained indefinitely.Harsh maybe,but necessary.

And to answer Nodin, yes on this occasion he was taken off the meds but in the future he could easily take a notion to stop taking them or as I said earlier, just as easily forget to take them at which point he apparently becomes an extremely dangerous force of nature. Public safety trumpa his right to liberty and until he is proven to be no more of a risk than your average joe I think he should be detained and receive on going treatment.

But tacked onto that sentiment is the very clear statement that the iona is a deplorable Iinstitution. Of course I have no idea what it must be like to have a family member suffering from any form of psychosis and I pray I never will.I have nothing but the deepest sympathy for anybody in such situations.
When I speak of individuals being detained indefinitely I speak of individuals who fall into the Saverio Bellante bracket only.Mr.Bellante killed and ate the heart of his landlord a mere 48 hours after stopping one of this medications.I personally think that is an unacceptable risk to society as a whole and I feel the judgement today,of detaining Mr.Bellante indefinitely in the central mental hospital,was the correct one.
Of course people who experience and live with psychosis have much to offer the world but I'm not sure if the family of the murder victim who's body Kerouac helped dump in the Hudson river would agree.

The man was not merely existing as you so compassionately put it.He obtained a degree in politics in university,was previously in a long term relationship,worked for a pharmaceutical company and had substantial savings.This is precisely the reason why this case is so shocking,in that over such a short period of time his condition can deteriorate so shockingly and result in such a cataclysmic outcome.
You could never disappoint me Nodin but I think you know where I'm coming from here.There is no set period of time for his detention and considering the extreme danger to society he possesses I think we can safely say its long term.
