They are supposed to be played at the resolution they are developed for.
By running them through a emulator you just blow the pixels up and see them instead on a LCD monitor, nasty...

This is not really true for 3D games.

Also, pixels are generally perfectly visible on most of the hardware you listed. I don't mind pixels blown up on a large HDTV; quite a nice look. As long as the individual pixels are sharp, and theres no reason they wouldnt be.

A CRT based display does a lot of work smoothing the image, along with the scanlines, features an LCD display just can't match.

Just buy the original console,, an RGB cable and a cheap Sony Trinitron, off you go to happy land.

CRT tech is far better than LCD technology. LCDs, even modern ones have very poor colour and blacks compared to CRT. They only won out because they are cheaper, smaller and less power hungry. Everything will look better on a CRT especially retro games (wish I had gotten my hands on one of those rare HD CRT screens when they were around.

Also the pixelated look is a total fallacy. Old games never looked pixelated, that's just a result of people playing emulators or digital releases on LCD screens with no scan lines. The scan lines create an antialiasing effect meaning games, even if low res look smooth and not blocky. Games never looked blocky like indie games seem to think they do.

As for emulation, emulation is not very accurate (with exceptions like BSNES that emulate to near transistor level but they require a crazy powerful PC to run). Unless it's something like the ports that M2 who are specialists then emulation is just 'good enough' that most people won't notice and far from accurate. Also you can't emulate the scanline look of a CRT, BSNES can be run in super high resolution with shaders that an emulate scan lines quite well but most emulators use something like super eagle smoothing that does fake antialiasing but also destroys detail in the sprites and ultimately looks a bit crap.

Nah, I can see pixels perfectly well on consoles like the NES and the Gameboy. I'd have to look again at newer platforms. Fallacy or no, people generally like the look. Makes for a nice change to 4XMSAA on everything; its deliberate, there's artistic choice put into it, rather than simply being a limitation of the hardware. There's a beautiful 'shorthand' to it.

I'm aware that enthusiasts can be quite... demanding with what they game retro on, I've seen several eh... in depth threads on the likes of Neogaf but I'm fine with nice big blocky retro on an IPS. I'm sure there's ghosting or something that would be a dealbreaker for some when it comes to IPS, but it looks fine to me. If you can't see the pixels in retro games chances are you can't spot panel weaknesses either.

The Gameboy is a LCD screen so pixels are very easy to make out but a NES on a CRT is very different.

Now I'm not saying everyone needs to go out and only play old games on original hardware with a CRT, I've to play my old consoles on a LCD due to the space in the room I currently live in but really that pixelated look really isn't what people were seeing back in the day but false nostalgia due to emulation on LCD monitors.

I was in Japan recently and one of the most glorious things I saw were all those old arcade classics on Egret cabinets with their massive almost flat CRT's with scanlines. The games just looked gorgeous on them.

You misunderstand, these games were designed to be played on a CRT, at a time when they were developed on development kits that displayed on CRT monitors.
An LCD is a poor poor substitute and only makes the games look dreadful.
RGB only on a good quality TV set.
Original hardware, it's a necessary thing, as well as original controllers.
Zelda Link to the Past should only be played on a SNES.

Yeah gimme that first pacman over the second any day. Personal preference I suppose. Similarly, I wouldn't run Mario Galaxy on Dolphin at 480p, whether Nintendo feels thats the 'way its meant to be seen'or not. Crank that bad boy up to 1080p I do.

I just finished up 14 months in Japan. It's good for that stuff alright. Found one of those CRT's with a SNES built into it on Craigslist but it was too pricey and the pillock had painted a rainbow on its outer casing, would've needed re-spraying, wasn't worth it. Lots of little gems floating around though.

I sold mine about a year ago. It was a great TV. But it was just way too big, took up a massive amount of space and weighed a tonne. Got about €40. I think it was worth more. May buy one again in the future if I've more space. I used it for all my retro gaming right up to and including the Wii.

Wind Waker physical copy new is notoriously hard to get cheap. I ended up getting it relatively cheap on eBay new from Australia. I still haven't tried it, do Australian region games work on an Irish Wii U?

Also, must mention, I got my Wii U in December, along with a Pro Controller. I remember you guys mentioning the incredible battery life of said controller. Granted I only use it for Mario Kart mainly, but we're 7 months down the line and I have yet to recharge it..........does it run on nuclear power?!?!? That's incredible!

I've recharged mine once. It's an amazing achievement compared to the battery life of the PS4 controller which is around 6-8 hours.

Aus is PAL so you should be ok.

Looks like I'll have to spring for the collectors edition... oh dear :P

Didn't get a large print run it seems and it's fairly expensive

It's not very good though and the servers are terrible with hardly anybody online. To have it for collection purposes I'd understand but to play? No thanks. It's practically the same as Wii Sports, just with a lick of HD paint.

is it any good for local play, and does the HD lick of paint make any significant improvement over Sports and Sports Resort on the Wii? I'd want it mainly for local play of Tennis and Bowling, but I have the original 2.

I've got my Wii U set up and I'm loving it. I've been playing Wind Waker and trying out some Wii games on the gamepad and it's brilliant that I can play when someone else is using the tv.

This is a bit embarrassing.
Three days ago my Wii U gamepad charger packed in. Stopped working. No more juice. Zip. Nada. Killed by the fall of a tree.

I muttered utterances under my breath about how dare nintendo attach such a shoddily made product and ship it with theirs.
I looked up alternative models, where to buy them etc. (I Looked a lot further than those).
And I googled "Wii U gamepad charger problems" - and found it to be a 'well known' issue.

This morning I woke up, feeling a little bored and sick of other consoles atm.
Thinking what to do.. one word popped into my head..

"FUSE"

A part of me was really kind of hoping that wasn't the problem, as that really is basic stuff.. It should have been the first thing I checked...

It was.

The Fuse in the Gamepad Charger is a 3A. It will blow quicker than a 10A or 13A for example, but that is to protect the sacred gamepad.
I have a 10A in at the minute, just to charge it (I'm hoping that there will be no power surges or faults until it is charged), and I am getting a 3A to put in it today.
I'm going to buy a few, as I'd imagine these go quite easily.

Sorry for the Long post.

TL:DR

If your Wii U Gamepad Charger died or Changed a Fleeting World for an Immortal Rest - It may be the Fuse.
Check that first.
