Just go somewhere else. I can only speak from my own experience but generally the **** ones are weeded out and the good ones are the senior doorstaff you see on doors and who know what they're doing. All that said I will over-rule bouncers when I think they're wrong. They cannot be relied upon to check for ID or drunkenness and many seem confused about legal closing times in Ireland.

There is probably a reason they have decided to take on bouncers as well, similar to how the shops in O'Connell street have all got them.

I dont do a head count when i go somewhere, to see how many staff ill be paying for on a given night. They're used for more than stopping trouble. Its so the bar staff dont have to worry about serving underagers too, not to mention theres always one ejit on a nightout looking for a barney. Ludicrous to think a place with bouncers is dodgey. And yoi'll find security on shops throughout town, not just oconnell street.

Pub is owned by a 30-something entrepreneur with a cheesy grin and a well trimmed beard. Inside it would be usually quite industrial looking with large posters and big screens covering up the otherwise 'unfinished building' look. Inside you'd have young, often clueless but well groomed bar staff with dyed and / or spiky hair all wearing the same clothes (possibly branded). Some of the staff may have a poor grasp of the English language and give back the wrong change but ya wouldn't mind too much because on a busy night you'd get your own back by passing off any ould worthless foreign currency as 1 and 2 euro coins. They wouldn't have too many taps at a time running either. The jingleberries would tend to be loud and fairly sh1te, yet not the absolute worst, no Justin Bieber or anything, not much vocals in an attempt to keep it neutral. You'd get some of the more unusual stuff on tap like Hoegaarden and a couple of popular craft beers for the hipster vote but nothing mad eccentric either. There'd usually be a little upstairs part with no Guinness tap and possibly no stout at all. There'd be a cocktail menu but it would only have stuff that's easy and quick to make. In one of the corners you'd have one of those mist or fake smoke generator thingies and you'd go and sit close to that hoping it was real smoke and wishing it would drown out the smell of farts from lads who'd be off their heads flailing around the place with skinny jeans and white t-shirts thinking they're the bee's knees.

Bouncers tended to be much rougher round the edges, not saying all of them, but it would not have been unusual for guys to literally be thrown through fire exit if they were too drunk or if they snuck in club. A Polish bouncer mentioned to me, how he had been fired for punching a female patron, as he was getting changed next to me in the gym locker room like it was a normal thing to do. This was around 2007-2008, by which point, I found bouncer pretty much everywhere polite and chatty, and generally helpful. The only times they tended to be abrupt was if the needed to break up a fight or if there is a safety issue. I don't get the impression that things are the same in UK, going on what I have heard from lads I know, who bounce over there, but then they could be just bigging up. Some of these guys are characters.?
