Are most people on after hours former/current or would be hipsters?

Just reading a lot of the threads I get the impression that I should grow a beard, buy one of those smurf woolly hats (no matter what the weather) and get a pair of skinny jeans...

It just seems to after hours has that "vibe" to me.

Maybe there should be a transitional forum where I can slowly graduate to the Auld ones and Auld fellas forum instead?:D

I don't think you understand the difference between an opinion and a generalisation. The poster said should be able to - that's aspirational. If they said is able to - now that would be generalising. I don't know any man that wears skinny jeans, or probably could wear them without crushing their ball sacks. But I do know some underdeveloped teens, including my nephews that wear them. But I expect once they grow up and reach physical maturity they'll cease wearing them.

Hipsters is the worst look of all time hands down, they look absolutely ridicalous on a grand scale.

The only trend I think of that was similar to the hipster thing was the Nirvana grunge thing in the 90s. But most teenagers look unwashed anyway so it was an easy trend to follow. It did not seem to be as all encompassing or as long lasting as this hipster thing they are everywhere now!

I did not even know what a hipster was until I recently googled "why are men growing beards" Then eventually "what is a hipster"..
It seemed to start out as some sort of sub-culture...is it just a look now or is there any weight/meaning behind the image? :rolleyes:

Note* I am guy who is happiest in average jeans, plain t-shirt and a nondescript haircut of no particular style.

I am glad there seem to be a fair few non-hipsters on AH now I thought they had taken over the planet..
Though at the rate it is going even the Aliens might have Green Ronnie Drew Beards. The skinny Jeans and big glasses would suit them in fairness...

The problem with hipsterism is that it involves beards. Facial hair comes on and out of fashion -- nothing new there. The economist had a great graph of facial hair in the U.S. 1800-2000 and it was nearly ubiquitous ( from moustaches to side burns to full beards) mid 19th century. 90%.

It dropped to 20% in the 1990s. However beards then were old peoples attire as I recall, and the U.S. is probably more hirsute than Ireland which was probably only 10% ( I say anecdotally).

We haven't done beards except for one period -- the 1970's. Those beards were greying when I was a teenager and I associated them with ageing hippies and trade unionists. They were anything but cool. The thing is if you wear your beard for long enough it becomes your face and shaving it is not an option as you don't really know what you really look like without, probably more hideous than with the beard. So people who have them in their 20's tend to have them for life. Full beards anyway. It becomes their face.

Beware hipsters. You are the aging hippies and beardies of the future. Once fashion changes you will look sad, greyed and middle aged before your time, unless beard dye becomes acceptable.

I don't agree with OP. All I see on AH in relation to hipsters is criticism of them - and sometimes applying the term where it's not applicable.
