I have a load of scrap copper I want to sell. Someone told me recently that you need to apply for a license to see scrap to a scrap dealer, has anyone got any info on this or sells any scrap themselves?

There may be, but are you suggesting that a person (individually or even as part of a small group) could successfully, economically and safely extract and then store these materials, not to mention the chemicals which are required to extract them.

Im all for recycling but while I think mining electronics for elements is a good idea, it needs to be done on a large scale to be economically viable and safe.
Dont want my neighbours storing dangerous chemicals and then what? pouring the remnants down the drain ?:eek:

Hi I've a couple of copper cylinders full of copper but was wondering if it would be better to take the brass fittings off the pipes before bringing them in will it affect the price?

Just a note to say,I was over in O'Reillys in Ballybough last week, he was not showing any interest in taking STEEL off anyone, he was telling people to stick it in his skip. He'll probably make money off the items in the skip, but there was a lad emptying a whole truck into the skip and I don't think my handful of steel would make a difference.

sorry for late reply, the point I was trying to make was that charities not individuals are happy to take your old electronic equipment and they use specialists to extract the precious metals and thus make money. Likewise councils make money off all the old scrap metals, wee items from their recycling centres.

I'm doing a bit of research for a course I'm on and I'm looking for a list of all scrap metal recyclers in the country who are fully licensed to take in end of life vehicles, HMS 1&2 (Heavy Melting Scrap grades 1 & 2), batteries, non ferrous metals (e.g. aluminium and copper) etc. I've tried looking online (including the Golden Pages) but can't find a single directory in which they are all listed.

I'm also looking for a source of information which compares what general scrap yards and licensed recyclers pay for the type of scrap outlined above. Is there a market or noticeboard where the various licensed recyclers around the country post their prices so people with scrap to sell can see where the best deal is or do people still have to ring around or use forums like this to find out the best prices?

Cheers for any feedback or steer you can give me.

But i am hearing that there is new laws governing the selling of the stuff.

Afaik it's about quarter the price of clean copper if you can get a place to take it!
Is it rolls or is it short strips?

where are they in clondalkin? I was going to get rid of a few old radiators.
It might not seem worth it but its better than just bringing them to the dump,
its that or pay someone to take them away.

Dealt with her a good few times. Really good prices there. Don't forget if its copper cable you have , there's a big difference in price when it's stripped of the insulation

Now that I add it up, it just isnt worth it for me really,
I'm wondering if the recycle centres take steel for free, if not Id rather get 1.50 for it at a scrapers rather than pay 10-15 to dispose of it at a recycle centre when it can and will be recycled.

When you say old Rads are to talking period or just old steel Rads. You could try Macs salvage in Islandbridge Dublin 8.

Ive a few old rads myself to remove, theres a place in clondalkin I intended to go to, I doubt I'll get much, they are not a period type, just modern mild steel?

for me its closer than the recycling centre and I'll get a few quid for them maybe, which is still less than driving further to recycle and to have to pay for entry.

Where abouts in Clondalkin is there a scrap yard. I'm just curious as I know Clondalkin quite well and never new of one. Used to cycle and pick Blackberries as a child around Clondalkin.

Well it used to be there and Im sure it still is, but as you pull out from the Esso garage beside the canal, turn tight along the road that eventually passes wheatfield prison (ie dont go towards ronanstown).
As you go up there there is a humpback bridge that used to be one lane at a time, just after that its in on the left.

Anyone any ideas what I'll get for some mild steel rads?
