Have you met your hero, did they disappoint?

I've never met a hero of mine.
I know that my brother played darts against John Lowe who is his favourite player and the person who's play style he tries to play like. Needless to say my brother lost but he was disappointed at how unfriendly the man was before and after the game.

It seems the criteria for becoming a hero have slipped a lot in the last few decades. How does writing a book, being good at kicking a ball around a field, being a good actor or singer make you a hero?

we don't seem to talking about global life saving heroes....just personal ones

as i said i met my hero kevin shields and that was great.....but i was on antibiotics at the time and now that you mention it i'm kinda taking that fact for granted, like if mr penicilin walked past ...i wouldn't know him from a crow

In my book you pretty much have to put your life or dignity on the line to be a hero. So emergency services, the likes of astronauts, whistleblowers...

used to have bill o herlihy come into the shop i worked in during college alot, was a fantastic man to chat too and always had time for a chinwag too

one day during world cup he came in with giles and ossie ardilles and the three lads were so down to earth and friendly i was taken aback.

once met micheal palin and i can confirm he is genuinely a nice man

Met Mad Frankie Fraser while pushing my son in his buggy across the Ha'penny bridge a good few years back.

Lovely affable gentleman to talk to, you'd never have guessed he was an underworld legend for his violence/ferocity.

He was doing an 'Evening With...' Q&A in Dublin.

Gave my son £5 for sweets & a pair of tickets (for me & the OH) to his show that evening.

I worked at their show in Dublin about 20 years ago, on local crew. It was the last night of the tour, and they were having a party to celebrate. They made a point of inviting all the locals along. I didn't go, as it happens, but it was great to be asked. Many artists wouldn't even nod at you as they passed you in the corridor. Have a very drunk Liam Gallagher a light at the same gig. Seemed nice, but very pissed.

I agree with you about soccer players, but people writing books can be heroes - they can change, help, and educate millions. There are some that have changed my life, like Terry Pratchett, who also went on to be a shining light in other issues. That's what a hero is. And should be.
