The beer is class, my new beer of choice when the Franziskaner etc is gone, is the weissbier lidl sell in cans at E1.19 my days of Heineken, Coors and the other crap are long gone...

I have been in the uk the last 3 weekends in a row, LOL at ripoffrepublic! 3 bottles of erdinger in tesco were £5. that is E6.93 today! Lots of stuff you would see as E1 on the shelves here was £1 over there...

I've seen those cans for €1.19 - yet to try them - do they give a hangover the day after?

As far as I'm aware, a lot of the own brand beers in lidl and aldi are all brewed under the German purity laws so I can imagine them being fairly good for not giving a hangover. If that makes sense?

If your ok with other weissbiers you'll be ok with those some people find wheat based beers give them an almighty hangover they wouldn't get from a barley beer.

Don't think that law is in affect anymore.

Was also told that a recent change prohibits companies advertising the fact that they keep by the old law. (I also could be completely wrong)

So basically you just don't know if the beer is brewed according to the 'law' anymore.

Have to agree with this, I spent the last three months in England and it's definitely more expensive for a lot of things on a direct currency conversion basis. A pint could be cheaper in the right bars but beyond that almost everything was similarly priced or more expensive.

And that German Purity Law was a racket anyway, it's no harm if it's gone.

Finally (and on-topic) Franziskaner is a great weisbeir, even for double that price it'd be worth it.

Sampled 3 bottles last night. Lovely stuff altogether!!

So much more subtle than that Hoegaarden stuff. I found that over powering.

I'm converted which means there's less Franziskaner to go round.

For those who are new to hefeweizen's make sure to stir up the yeast while pouring the beer. The yeast adds body and flavour. I've found that rolling the bottle gently a number of times on a flat surface before opening then giving it a final swirl when there's about 2cms of beer remaining in the bottle works best.

Its also nice to have the correct glass as it will allow a proper head to form while you're pouring.
