Like others, I'll always remember 911. I was working in the home electronics department of a department store at the time. Just seeing all the televisions change over from Home and Away or whatever was on to this breaking coverage, and the crowds of people just starting to gather in the shop as the news kept developing.

On a personal note, the death of Dr. Garret Fitzgerald. I'd seen the man speak on a number of occasions over the years and was a huge admirer of his. I was in a hotel in Vietnam at the time and when I read the news I was shocked and deeply saddened. Listening in to the resulting radio coverage about this extraordinary statesman and intellectual really brought home to me about how we have people who truly wanted to do the State some service. There was stories about his early life working in Aer Lingus working out schedules and time slots before computers and presenting these at early conferences in Europe about the airline industry. About doing a 14 hour slot on TV at the age of 83 covering the general election count. His attempts to legislate for divorce and abortion in a deeply Catholic 1980's.

Was absolutely stopped in my tracks when I happened upon the TV newsflash.

Didn't hear about 9/11 until that evening, and didn't see a TV till about 10pm that night. I will never ever forget that first sight I saw of the planes flying into the towers. The rest of the world was used to it at that point ( iykwim) but it was the first myself and the group I was with had seen of it. Utterly shocking.

Brian Boru's death at the battle of Clontarf in 1014 and Enda Kenny coming out as a lesbian at the 2017 Rose of Tralee really stand out as two particularly big ones to me on a personal level, but if I had to pick just the one, it'd have to be when I was listening to the radio earlier today at the live Mozart gig in Nigeria when a special report came on from Andy the angry magical golden unicorn saying that one of my neighbours is keeping all my medication down in their pants.

Pity that he couldn't say in his report which neighbour.

But he kindly told me I've a 482% better chance of getting it back tonight if I wait until ALL my neighbours are asleep in their beds, I put raw meat on my head and I bring my cordless power drill with me.

Hmm there are a few.

The Falklands War, I was still in primary school at the time and we all were delighted with the Argentinian sinking of British Ships. Shows how juvenile we were back then but at that time and in our minds Britain was the old enemy.

Space Shuttle disaster in 86. Was always fascinated by Space so this was a big shock.

The fall of the Wall in 89, because it was such a large part of our lives that Europe was divided.

Death of Princess Diana in '97 because my Dad had his first heart attack that night as well. I got back from a friends wedding only to find out the news. I had a few drinks on me so I couldn't drive to the hospital, so I stayed up all night watching the coverage on the channels that were on.

September the 11th Obviously. Was in a Pub having lunch and saw the coverage on the TV. Honestly thought it was a trailer for a new Die Hard film. It's only when they repeated the coverage that we realised it was something that was real.
