Haven't seen a thread about poetry so i thought id make one!
So, what poets have yous covered in class and what ones would you like to come up?

We've done Frost, Plath, Dickinson, Montague, Ni Chuilleanain, Hardy, Yeats and Donne. Our teacher wants us to cover all the poets.. frankly I think its a waste of time

Guys was just wondering how ye write your poetry essays?
Am looking for a high grade in English but I write my essays in the following format:
Intro
Poem 1
Poem 2
Poem 3
Poem 4...
Conclusion.
Is there a better way to write the essay that will maximise my grade, (I get A's with this style anyway but not sure if it's just our teachers preference)
Please help!

It depends on the question. For some I might do it by technique, or if the question has two sections (eg style and subject matter) I'll do it by that. For others I do it by poem. I personally worry about repeating myself constantly if I only have a bit to say on how a technique is used or on a poem, but the way you structure your essay is fine. I think doing it by poem is easiest, but it can depend on the poet.

I'm the same and also scared of not going into enough depth if I do it the other way, thanks so much for the reply, I think for the most part I'll stick to poem by poem unless it's an absolute necessary to go the other way...

Agree with ye on the subject of type of question asked. However, it's now harm to give a brief referral to one of the other poems studied e.g. if you are discussing the poem The Locket by Montague give a little cut as to how it differs to The Cage. The main thing to remember about poetry is personal reflection! But otherwise that strategy is good

Our english class had not done Ni chuilleanain and i might be wrong but werent the papers finalised 1st/2nd week of january?

Ok! And we were told November, but you're probs right! Terrorism could probably come up anyway regardless of Charlie Hebdo I'd say!

Does anyone know what poets are coming up in 2016? Since it's Ni Chuileanain's first year, she might instead make an appearance on the 2016 one. I'd love it if Plath or Dickinson come up, the other poets we've done are a bit of a snooze sometimes.

Oh, I did not realise that Plath cane up two years in a row! They won't play the same trick twice on a female poet in successive years so. Looks like they probably won't appear because of that. Maybe they might decide not to have that system of one poet per category.. Especially since a load of people studied the exact same poet because he was the only one in his category last year. I just don't think she'll come up, but I think it's wishful thinking lol thanks

Yeah we're studying Theme/Issue and Lit Genre and I find theme so much easier to write on. Basically retelling the story by referencing the scenes that the theme is seen in. Fingers crossed.

Hardy hasn't appeared in a while and Eilenn first time
Would think it's a safe bet learning off these 2 really well before the exam

Too risky! Both could easily not come up. Maybe if you really wanted to do only two poets you could do Montague and Yeats or Nu Chuilleanáin and Dickinson. Either way, still very risky.

Yeah I suppose you are right. I mean I have 6 poets studied very well but would like to focus on those 2 real well just before the exam 😄

Oh yeah I Thought you were going all out on those two! I'll probably specialise in one or Two as well, and have five studied.

I Think it might be better if you were to specialise in two similar poets, like, as I said, Montague and Yeats, or Donne, Frost and Hardy or Dickinson and Ni Chuilleanáin. Hardy and Ni Chuilleanáin don't link and both can come up the same time and also both could not come up.

But, if they're your favourite, then go for it, but maybe do another one alongside. I'll be doing Plath just because she's interesting even though she has such a low chance of coming up.

Our techer told us Thomas Hardy has a high chance as he wasnt on the course since the last 2/3 years and he is not on the course for another 2 year after us.Also john Montague has a very high chance...but only learning 2 poets is very risky as people predicted Seamus Heaney to come up in the poetry section in 2014 but he came up in the reading comprehensation

Oh yeah definitely learning just two is basically suicide 😃 But yeah what you are saying is true I really hope for either Chuilleanain,Hardy or Donne to appear as I know them inside out and love their poetry
But then again even looking at past papers you can always be wrong even if everything points that this poet is coming up for definite

I doubt Plath will come up (yes I know, obviously), but she's also on the course for the next two years IIRC. I agree, Ni Chuilleanáin probably won't come up. So that leaves Dickinson, who looks quite likely, and they always like to have a poet coming up twice in a row.

Frost looks very likely as well, but it's a gamble that can have bad consequences.

As OMGeary said, Yeats has come up twice.

Ni Chuilleanáin is coming up next year and another tear in the near future. Wouldn't it be a tad unlikely for her to come up two times in a row as a new poet? That why I don't think she'll come up, nobody would bother with her next year.

That's also why Plath will probably not come up.

Dickinson is most likely. They will pick the poets that people expect not to come up, not the poets that are likely. That's why one should study the poets everyone's NOT saying to study. Unless they have good reason against it.

My English teacher was convinced both Yates and Ni Chuilleanain were coming up for this year, but as teachers themselves know so little about Ni Chuilleanain she doubts if she will come up, and if she does, the question will be fairly easy as she's never been on before. As for Yates, next year is the 100 year anniversary of 1916 he might be saved for next year. Frost and Montague look likely. Anyone any tips on what might be coming up for LC History, Dictatorship and Democracy topic?

We have done : Donne, Ni Chuilleanan, Montague, Hardy,plath and dickinson. Only planning on learning the first 4 as I highly doubt either of them will appear on the paper. Plus i hate their poetry!!
