Just basically pull the belt out, spray it and clean with a cloth. Its all lint and shoite that causes the belt not to retract quickly.

Would anyone here be able to throw an opinion out?

My friend has an old 206. Hadn't sent it in for NCT last year, as it has been given him a few problems, mostly electrical, that he reckons will cost the value of his car to fix, and he's hoping to get a different car towards the end of the year.

Not sure how long his NCT is out, but it's a while (not sure if it'd be a year or not); the car is taxed.

He rang me in a panic there - some scumbags have broken into his car. In order to do so, they bent the whole top of the door frame out/down.

He reckons the car is a writeoff as he can't imagine it being a cheap fix (unless he gets a door somewhere? But even then I'd imagine thats a pricy fix, to he changing doors around?).

He said he didn't ring Insurance yet as he's not sure if 1) they'll cover attempted break in (im lead to believe the dirtbags didn't actually get in or take anything), and 2) if him having no NCT would cause hassle?

He's fully comp. My thought is the the Insurance company will just declare the car an economic write off if it works out too expensive to fix, or they'll just fix it and move on, if it's cheap, and that NCT will not be mentioned either way?
(I think that in the event if a claim, insurance company have to demonstrate that the lack of NCT was a contributory factor to avoid paying out?).

Or am I way off? Haven't seen the car myself, but I have seen cars damaged like that before (door frame bent) so I've an idea what he means.

I think he's actually hoping that the break in, coupled with his previous electrical and mechanical issues, May lead the Insurance company to write the car off, but I don't think they acknowledge other issues do they?

(and even if they do, I think his car is only worth about a grand, so even if they do write it off and pay him market value, he will only have the money to buy another car for the same money (most likely with it's own expensive issues!).

As Colm said, for something like a 206 of which they're are plenty both on the road and in scrapyards, assuming it's a popular enough colour ring a few scrapyards and pick up a door for €40-€50.

If you have a few tools a door change shouldn't be that impossible. On a 156 it's handy enough, sure dgt can have a door changed in about 20 minutes...:D

but yeah probably skip the tightening the spring step as I don't think a flat spring should lose any of its energy regardless of it's age.

Re: yellow plug - it's actually what Colm already said - when you lift up a black hinge/tab you'll find the way to unplug the rest. And as always when playing with airbags/belt tensioners - disconnect battery first and wait at least 5 minutes!

The best way (not the laziest obviously) to clean dirty belt is to unwind it fully, disconnect from its housing and wash it - I washed mine in washing machine.

Once you'll have belt and winding mechanism separated you can also try to rotate a reel one more turn to gain more tension from a spring, but only if really necessary.

I saw mary lou on the news yesterday spotting on about getting a speed limit of 25k/h(15mph) in residential areas, absolutely crazy, its very difficult to stick to 30 in town I mostly have to take my foot off the accelerator and just roll in order to archive that speed. IMO if they want to reduce the speed limit it should be around 40 km/h.

If they were smart they would give the residents the 20kmh speed limit that they want. Then id go along and stick a speed camera in the estate to enforce it and watch how many get fines and points.

they'll come back saying its a disgrace that the speed limit is being enforced and they have to pay fines

Im kind of over the MX5 at this point, I'll definitely come back to the idea and buy one again but that'll be down the line with better job security and a practical daily to go with it.

New car shall be quicker and far more practical, something familiar.
