The Restaurant Recommendation Thread

There's been a crazy number of threads recently looking for restaurant recommendations, so I'd like to start a specific thread for it. Please post below about your favourite restaurants - why you like them, what price range they are, what type of food they serve, if they have an early bird, opening hours if you know them, where they're located. If you could include a link to the website, that would be great. The more details, the better. This is not a thread to post negative reviews - there's a thread in the main Food & Drink forum for that if you like. Basically, I want this thread to be full of recommendations, not positive and negative reviews. That being said, you can disagree with a recommendation briefly if you really feel the need to, but you must have a really valid reason such as an awful experience, rather than "I don't really like the food" or "It's too expensive".

Oh god not it isn't... Was shocked like above we got food in there one night and they best thing on the plate was the beans.. It was slop, not even presented nicely.. Oh I rem Cactus Jacks in Dubai now there was a Mexican place like what the Café should be..

We went in were asked to move three times after being told to pick out own seat, the last time I told them no we weren't moving.. Then we eventually ordered, my drink was gone when he picked up the plates ordered another, and we got the slop on a plate, and tried to get the waiter no where to be seen, eventually after diner when we had coffee he arrived with the drink, he said sorry he had to go out and buy a bottle to make the drink I was like well now you know what to do with it.. Mad rubbish staff and rubbish food

Cafe Mex was nice when I was young - I don't know if that was because I hadn't travelled much at that stage, or because it was actually nice back then.

But, I ate there about 2 years ago with friends and found it really poor. Wouldn't waste my money or time returning unfortunately.

Totally agree, used to love Café Mexicana years ago but in the last 5 years or so it's gone really poor; and they have always been pricy - 18e for fajitas or something like that - crazy

Ah now, I've a soft spot for cafe mexicana. A big plate of nachos and a pitcher of margharitas with buddies. yum yum.

Went to Elbow Lane and have to agree with previous poster(s?), the food was awesome. Started with what was some kind of chorizo like jam on toast and followed with what was essentially a giant arancini made out of duck risotto. Blew my mind, twice.

Company had the shrimp starter which was the only thing that wasn't very impressive with the meal, they were whole shrimp in some kind of sauce. Not sure if it was his peeling skills or the shrimp themselves, but they were very unsatisfying, not really a lot left after peeling. His sirloin with bernaise butter was glorious, though for a big lad I'd say getting some chips or some other side would be a good idea.

New Asian street food place opening up near the end of Barrack street next month. Not sure exactly where but it's possibly the old Yangtze river place. I'm not joking.

Annies in Sunday's Well has changed ownership and all but one member of staff. Will be interesting to see what changes that brings to the menu, quality & price, if they are indeed going to served food.

Passed today - sign in the window saying something like bar open from 4pm and "kitchen - watch this space".

Anyone been to Iberian WAY?

I am desperately craving really good Spanish food and it sucks that Cork has no decent options. Just googling and I spotted Iberian WAY but hard to tell from site and tripadvisor if it is really casual place or it I could make a night out of it with my wife for dinner.

Anyone been? The reviews are quite good and seems to quite authentic Spanish.

White Horse in Ballincollig is top notch!

Got their chargrilled chicken breast stuffed with black pudding and Supreme Mushroom sauce and excellent mash!

Only complaint is it took about a half hour to get the food, which is a bit much at lunch time I'll put that down to cooking the chicken fresh!

I thought that was just a deli! Do they serve food too?

I haven't been myself, but I know a friend of mine was getting language lessons from a Spanish girl who was raving about it!

Oysters have taken Annie's over and have closed their Clarion hotel location. I think it's not going to be 'Oysters' though. A totally different menu with far less emphasis on seafood.

Loved annies - hope they do not change it for the worse..

I hope they improve their food, hygiene and make their prices more realistic. Considering many of the deals available in many Cork restaurants they were vastly overpriced.

Prices in both Oysters and Annies were on a similar level. E8 - 10 for starters, E18 to 24 for mains, generally speaking.

For seafood, I felt Oysters was fairly priced. It certainly wasn't an every day restaurant, but it never marketed itself as one.

im mostly talking about seafood - as thats what i eat when i go out for dinner

seafood specials in annies were €20

I'd have to disagree with that, I had a very poor "Charcuterie" starter priced at around the 11 Euro mark in Annies a few months ago which comprised of a few pieces of ham and a couple of pieces of toasted bread.

Conversely, I ate in Jacobs recently and had a beautiful main and dessert for 25, 3 courses are available for 29. Annies don't offer anything similar.
