Official Conor McGregor Thread (READ MOD WARNING IN OP)

OK guys,

The dust has cleared on the disaster that was the last thread. The biggest culprits won't be joining us here (Or anywhere else on the forum). Others have been warned in PMs.

This thread is a clean slate for everyone but there will be zero tolerance on it.

I remind all users to take a fresh look at the charter before posting here.

FIGHTER BASHING OF ANY KIND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

It doesn't take a Masters in English to know the difference between a negative opinion of somebody and name calling.

This Thread is for all things about Connor that won't go into event threads. I.E. all speculation about opponents, his twitter posts, public appearances and media.

Once a fight has been announced and an event named all news relating to that fight can go into the event thread.

My own opinion on McGrogor vs Sanchez (Finally), this is an awful fight for sanchez I think. Especially if he loses to Connor at WW he is finished. Diego gets by with half decent striking and wrestling and the rest on athleticism and aggression.

Conors footwork is just too good to be held against the fence and isnt that much smaller than Diego. If Connor loses he'll probably get his wrist slapped by Dana and told to wise up and stick to 145, worst case scenario. Diego has much much more to lose in this fight and I think his emotions will get the best of him and we'll see something similar to Brimage.

But being honest I don't see the fight happening. Dana is probably getting a bit sick of fighters calling opponents out so publicly and he and his match makers will still want to be seen as the ones pulling the strings.

My newbie bandwagon opinion on Aldo is that he loves (to the point of "get's off on...") extreme violence, and will enjoy anything Conor throws at him and that is a worry! In fact i think they are well suited as fighters.

Apologies for any offense caused. But I really meant was anyone who is a very casual fan or who dips in and out. It's easy to see that anyone who will only tune into the odd fight but will get sucked in by McGregor might fall for the hype.

Conor was saying he was the best int he world long before he had actually proved it to anybody. He's taken all the right steps so far to back up what he's been saying.

There is what you say....and there is what you believe when the lights go out in your bedroom at night.

The last few fights will have given Conor a great deal of inner confidence that he can get in the ring and mix it with the best in the... All Bow Before Its Name ... UFC. He looked supremely confident in the octagon against Siver, much more so than before. He said it himself, he wanted to be in there longer, wanted to soak it up and enjoy it. That's huge for any doubts or demons he might have had before. (its easy to say he doesn't have any, you aren't in his head tho).

The sort of fighter I would be concerned about is Edgar in fact, maybe more so than Jose. Conor is right that Jose still uses that in and out kick-boxer style that has worked really well for years. He's unlikely to change and that makes him predictable. Jose is not immortal, he got hit a LOT in recent fights and while he proved he can take a punch and get into a war, it still means he can get hit and if nothing else, Conor has proved he can hit hard. Siver looked like he wanted none of the stand up after only a few straight lefts.

If I was predicting the fight, which I guess I am, I think Jose will stand with him to see if he can use the awesome leg kicks to kill Conor's movement... he'll decide he doesn't like the outcome and look to test his ground game. Whether he can get Conor to the ground, and keep him there, is the question that will decide the outcome of the fight imho.

You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Id favour edgar to beat aldo if they met again and i would also say edgar would be a tougher fight for mcgregor than aldo too. I wonder who they will get edgar to fight next with mendes and lamas tied up. Edgar taking all that time out and fighting penn was a big mistake for him. He could have been champ by now.

No offense taken. I sort of knew that you probably didn't mean me directly. I just wanted to clear up any possible confusion.

Point: I don't think someone has to be all that tuned in and all that interested in UFC to make a decent input or an informed and decent point about a fight and its combatants. Same as regards boxing or other disciplines. If someone sees something, for example that looks sussy or suspect, (weak opposition or an opponent clearly out of his depth) then they may be onto something. They may be wrong, but to label them as bandwagoners or misinformed may be a bit premature.

I am not sold on the hype yet. And there is some level of hype. Conor's fights that I have seen recently didn't excite me or make me really sit up. He may impress me in the future, and I hope he does, but I am waiting a bit until I start dishing out a certain level of adulation and praise.

I'm of the same opinion. I think stylistically Aldo is a better match for Conor than Frankie.

Either way, Frankie is next in line after Conor and I think right now he'll beat either Jose or Conor.

I dunno look at frankies face after maynards last bout and maynard just didn't have the tank. conor is ten times the skilful fighter maynard is in terms of sharp punches and dynamism (not wrestling obviously). I think conor would take edgar out too, he'd be huge to him also. edgar is starting to feel the wars over the years, a gentleman and superb fighter, heart personified I think.

I think aldo and McGregor will be a good fight, just let it happen, there's plenty of time for others to prove their point whichever way it goes to be honest. I think id be kicking palm tress van damme style in training though if I was McGregor.

I just think edgar is class but his best days are left beating maynard and penn etc all in the 155 days. It wold be great and all but despite the haters, I see conor beating him unless he spends 5 rounds on his back, to which ive no answer as we've not seen that yet.

Frankie looked great in his last fight though. Schooled swanson who is a dynamic striker.

Also i don't think we really need conors past opponents to say how hard he hits. The amount of tkos says all we need to know.

Siver was defiantly a tune up but apart from that his progession has been good, Brimage,halloway,brandao,poirier.

Personally I haven't seen enough of Conor to pick him over Aldo and Edgar in saying that the manner in which he dispatched the above fighters is very impressive.

The Champ, the guys with a shot to beat him ,the gate keepers to the top and then the rest,
To me Conor has just pasted the gatekeeper stage and done so beating Dustin so easy and the Siver fight proved nothing ,
Id love to see him aginst one of the next 3 before he fought Aldo ,

Conor seems to have the physical tools to cause Aldo issues. I wouldn't be sold on an Aldo win. If Conor can keep range then he can win. Aldo's stamina is very good, so if this gets into close quarters then I'd favour Aldo.

Poirier's performance was very uninspiring for me.

Totally agree. The last time i saw a fighter climb their way up to the title in such a fashion was jon jones, very similar quality of opponents!

A lot of mixed reviews of Conor as a fighter and person over the last while, so I want to throw my 2 cents into the mix:

He is living up to his hype and now has a shot at the title, I'm sure he will think of it as a massive failure if he doesn't win it this time around, but has a good a chance as anyone else in that division to make it happen.

On the personals, a lot of folk are complaining on how he carries himself in interviews. He has brought a buzz into the division, and excitement into Ireland over the sport.

Some people are whining about Pendred in the thread from the last fight, but Conor did say early days that he was going bringing more Irish into the UFC with him, and that can't be doubted.

I think it's brilliant to see Paddy Hollihan involved with the UFC, and comes across as a gent, but I don't think Paddy would be where he is today (I could be wrong here), if it wasn't for Conor. As well as bigging himself up, Conor did the same for his other teammates as well which I think he deserves credit for.

I think sometimes when someone clearly special comes along, it makes sense to hand them a title shot earlier than usual. Look at Jones when he fought Shogun. His best win was against Ryan Bader. Brock Lesnar's sole UFC win was against Heath Herring. Anderson Silva's sole UFC win was against Chris Leben.

All of these guys went on to win the belts and defend them.

Added to that, the fact that all the other main contenders have already lost to Aldo means Conor should get the shot.

There have been many more undeserving shots throughout UFC history. Conor's personality just causes a lot of people to spite him.

I don't think anyone has said he doesn't deserve a shot have they? He has worked extremely hard, both in and out of the octagon with the effort he puts in to promoting to earn his spot. He is clearly a very talented guy and just has that x factor about him, people will watch him, whether they hope he wins or loses it doesn't matter because they will be watching, they will be talking about him. He generates buzz

He deserves a shot, he has beaten ranked opponents and Aldo has already beaten whats in front of him. It its the class fight of the division at this point.

Ok, I left out Gunni specifically, and agree about Kavanagh, but it's just my opinion and I could be wrong, but Conor has done a great service to give them all a step up in the eyes of the public and the sport itself.

Any thoughts on when Aldo vs McGregor will officially be announced?

I know it's been said a few times that it will be in May in Vegas, which makes UFC 187 all but definite, but I don't want to book flights until it's officially announced.

I thought it would have been confirmed by now, since it was damn near confirmed before he even beat Siver.
