Sad news everyone

The 166 is dead and not worth saving... 166man was right in his predictions that it was a big end making the noise. Weird I thought as it didn't sound "heavy" enough to me but there you go. Now to rush out and buy another 166 :pac:

Regards buying another one there are a few options and as expected none of them are perfect.

Option one: Buy one from a friend of mine. It's actually his dads car and he has had it years. The good points about it are; It's a 2.5, it's cheap (€500), it's well looked after and needs nothing major. The bad points are; The body is a bit rough (not too bad though, straight but has a poor paint finish in places), No NCT (not a big deal), it doesn't have leather (but that can be cannibalised from my car) but the big one is it's an auto....

Option two: Buy a red one from a costumer of the mechanic I was with today. Haven't seen this one in the flesh but I'm told the good points are; it is super super clean and straight on the body, the interior is a brilliant colour and high spec and it's been really really well looked after. No NCT either. The only really bad point is it's a 2.0l 4 pot... And a touch expensive

Option three: Again another red car. Again I'm told this one is really clean but haven't seen it myself. It's a black interior but again that can be changed out. this one has an NCT but the problem with it is is that it is a 3.0. That means it's about 800 a year more on tax and insurance. This is the most expensive of them so far too...

Then lastly, the wild card! This

The first choice but transplant the engine into you're own. Then no messing with seats and whatnot. As long as the engine is in good condition and all the main servicing works been done.

I'd probably go with 2 or 3 but I guess it depends if you mind 2.0 v 2.5 or over. Might not be as nice sounding or to drive? Tax on 3.0 is saucey alright but if it's cheap enough might be worth it to you.

The condition of the rest of the car makes it really not worth it. It's just too far gone to save unfortunately.

Definitely not the wildcard there's not enough detail in the ad to tell you anything considering it's an alfa

Option 3 is in bangernomics and belongs to someone on alfaowner, but could you swallow the fuel and tax bills?

Option 2 sounds underpowered tbh

Of them all option one sounds the best, lack of NCT would make me wary, would they be willing to NCT it before you bought it?

The fuel on the 3.0 I can manage but not the tax really... Very hard to justify.

It's done less than 3000 miles since it's last NCT, Wouldn't worry me tbh.

There is a fourth option. There's a black 166 for sale off the market, owned by a chap who also has a 164 turbo. Has a few Interesting modifications. However its a three litre and auto as well.
Have you drove the auto 3 L?

Well I'm rushing straight out to buy another Alfa the same as I had and I've no desire to own another Levin. That says it all really!!!

i'd be all on for option one.

you know the cars history.
you know it's in at least "ok" shape.
it has the engine you want.
it's your cheapest way back into the car you want.
truth be told you'l probably enjoy tidying the bodywork.
you might even enjoy the autobox if you give it a chance, a big swank tank like that kind of justifies an auto really.

your wild card looks like it's had a tap on the driver side front does it? look at the panel gap around the headlight and bonnet and compare to the other side.

You're more than too kind. I really need to have a long hard think about what the next move will be. Hopefully I make the right decision for a change :pac: We both must be due a fair chunk of good luck at this stage, we should start playing the lotto :P

If I had never driven a manual I would love it. Some cars are really supposed to be manuals IMO and the 166 is one of them.

You're right in a way, I would enjoy that and it's what I've always done before, Started with a cosmetically weak car and done my best to make it good. I just sort of want too start with something nice for a change.

maybe this is a stingy way to look at it, but you must remember, all you really need is a good 2.5 engine, if it happens to come with a free 166 attached, then all the better.

any issues that then come about with the free 166 can be made good with parts from your old one.

the whole fun of the ownership experience imo is the messing and tinkering with it, spending endless Saturdays tidying up all those loosed ends and odd jobs, you'l probably find you'd get bored very quick if you jump straight in and buy a "mint" one.

keep the build thread updated either way. it's usually a good read

Well it needs another few bits and pieces too that don't sound that serious but are crazy labour intensive. I just don't have the energy to work on a 166 anymore, they're just dreadful to work on they really are!

What I want to be able to do is polish one and make it look nice

and do little bits and pieces to make it more enjoyable to drive not trying to make it drive at all!

There's a small possibility I'll have another 166 today! So watch this space
