Will red car paint fade in Ireland?

Do modern cars suffer from old issue of red car paint fading in sun?
Maybe we don't get enough sun for this to be an issue?
Im thinking of buying an 08 red audi and wondering would it fade if I keep it a few years?
Opinions?

I've a red focus. Reg plate 00.( Rarely washed and never waxed)
No fading.
Although I do see a few red cars around with the issue.
I suspect it is more to do with the quality/type of paint than anything else.
Will be interesting to hear from the experts what the cause of this is and how it can be avoided.

If you wash it properly and wax it it would. Be fine imho. I used to own a 15 yo wine CRX and never had a problem. Take s look on the Detailing forum for more info.

Reds location in the colour spectrum is what causes the problem, it's why 'solid red' is so much more prone than say wine red etc.

Modern cars clear coats will offer better UV protection as paint innovation advances, but only time will tell how they will fare.

I wouldn't not buy a car on account of it. I'd say with a small bit of real world maintenance it would be fine.

Really depends on the brand, some have better finishes than others. Older Opels for example are terrible and nearly always fade after a few years, not sure about them these days though.

Don't have any problems with our 2006 "True Red" MX-5, it's still very bright and vibrant. It is surprising though to see the difference in colour between the clear coated areas and the areas that were left 'bare' like the inside of the door jambs and sills, for example. Almost looks pink in comparison.

I guess some of the older red cars you see around that have that filmy, pinkish appearance pre-date the use of clear coats.

How long do you plan on holding onto it? Most modern red paint hasn't started fading yet, whether it will or not time will tell. However stone chip seems to be an issue on some of them where they're a lot more prone to chipping than previously.
If you only plan on holding onto it for two or three years, then I wouldn't worry about paint fading.

Mine has clear coat, it's faded underneath it. Common though for rosso red

Very low miles and we do little driving so expect to hold car for maybe 5 years...

Had an 02 red Polo, all the clearcoat peeled off it, it was in quite a state.

That's one of the only things I like about German cars, they know how to paint cars. Vag group are a1 in the paint department so fading wouldn't concern me.

Opel is GM, they just kept the token German name. They are about as German as Ford.

in fairness they are on to a good thing, having an indigenous name for every region they pedal their wares in. Opel/ Vauxhall/ Holden/ Saturn etc. you even see some cars with mud flaps with all the logos on them. they are pushing the German thing hard in Ireland though.

Opel is terrible for there paint to fade but if you wax and look after a car you will keep the color. Just purchase a decent wax and shampoo and give the car a good wash and wax it every now and again especially coming up to hotter months and it will be fine.

E10/11 corrolas are brutal for colour fade

Toyota aren't the best for red paint either.. The 03 to 09, can't think of the generation, suffered red painy/lacquer peel, the previous model had some of it too. Think Toyota were allowing free correction provided the car wasn't past a certain age.

now you mention it, was it the avensis i think people were getting resprays under warranty?

Focus seems to be the only cars with decent red coats. All the the others are either rubbish, or have been discontinued

My scooby is 05', but it still has a great Red colour. I am pretty sure all that dirt keeps colour from fading! :pac:
