I was reading the post regards new Galway Docks.

what is the location of the new docks?

if they are building a new port, what is the plan with old glaway docks.

I think its a good Idea but why does it have to be so big?

I always love to see the claddagh and sun shining off the water. its a timeless scene that would be ruined if this was to go ahead.

What about the design, why is nobody is saying stop, there has to be better option?

Meetings plural.

AFAIK the hearing is on from 09:30 to around 17:00 Tuesday to Friday. I believe it's to run for three weeks or so.

since they abandoned the high rise apartments and such the visibility of the proposal (the photomontages are clear) is alright imho... stagnation is one sure fire way of dying so fair play to them for thinking ahead and best of luck to them

Given that Foynes has apparently been financed for a large expansion, together with a new road and possible railway re-opening, I'd say that the odds of Galway Harbour Company being able to secure cash for this have diminished greatly. The Foynes people have previously been quite vocal in their opposition to any expansion plans in Galway.

Basically, but the form and route are still for debate. There's a Ten-T obligation there.

Answer to this seems to be to facilitate 40k tonne oil tankers from Topaz and Cold Chon who are the main commercial driving force behind it. The tourism Cruise ship benifit are of secondary concern commercially for the Galway Harbour company.

Personally I think this development would be disastrous to Galway both Aesthetically and Environmentally. Would make great business for Galway Harbour Company though.Would like to see some sort of Development go ahead in terms of accommodating Cruise and Marine Toursism some how but would hate to see the Docks being turned into a Massive Oil shipping Depot.

Add the fact that there is no Proper Motorway connection for HGV out of the docks you would see the Quality of life for Residents along the road routes affected also.

Yeah I'd like to see the marina and cruise stuff go ahead and leave the heavy commercial shipping to foynes.

After the hearings it was reported the case would be decided in about two months so we should hear more about it in the next few weeks.

Shannon-Foynes seems to be getting all the money at the minute. They are even getting a new road for the N69(which looks like it will also be used to bypass Adare) plus the M17/M18 is currently under construction. Can't see how the ABP will be able to justify putting millions of public money into a Regional Tier 3 Port when there is a Tier 1 Port 90 mins down the Motorway. Not to the scale requested anyhow IMHO.

This City is the pits, no solutions for traffic or roads, they closed an Airport now they want to close the docks, talk about shooting yourself in the foot it beggars belief. The other ports are working away as is Galway with no problems its the City Council that need to be looked at and their so called Engineers.

Cannot blame City Council on this one - well unless you blame them for not building a Galway City Port tunnel and road to service it.

Excellent news. Now that the stupid port idea is dead they can redevelop the area into a proper urban district.
The ball has started to roll at least with the Agustine hill/Ceannt Station plans unveiled a few days ago.

This looks promising and could be one of the most important developments of a generation in the city.

Although the last time Eddie Holding had a large portfolio of development land hoarded in the city, we ended up with a lot of holes in the ground and derelict hotels owned by NAMA, yet the same directors of bankrupt companies are somehow still at the helm!!

IE seem to be developing a lot of their unused lands like the Connolly quarter in Dublin and planning big housing developments around Colbert station in Limerick and Kent in Cork. I remain optamistic. Galway (and other regional cities) are in dire need of this kind of large scale development to have any chance to act as a counter balance to Dublin. Hopefully it's the catalyst for more.

Agree - access was the major downfall of the proposal.Plenty of potential in the dockland area for housing if Council get all the Port lands

Ya if you look at the press releases they seemed to try and head off all the obvious reasons for objections: environmental, transport, housing, accessibility, public areas etc.
