Dr Ali Selim, spokesman at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland, has warning Irish publications against posting comics mocking the Prophet Muhammad and said that legal action would be taken using the blasphemy legislation in order to prosecute those responsible.

When asked about freedom of speech: "We are great advocates of freedom of speech, but the freedom of speech we support is that freedom of speech that is practised responsibly.

"Everything has limits. Let me ask you one question: Can this paper publish mockery images of the Holocaust? Can they do that?"

So it seems he wants freedom of speech but only as long as it doesn't mock Muhammad or offends him in anyway.

This guy is living in a dream world where he thinks satire should not exist. His comments read like a threat being issued under the veil of legal action.

He could try to bring a case, but that doesn't mean one would be brought:

And does anyone know how these laws stack up to the EU human rights/ Freedom of expression laws ? And why no one has taken a case to the EU ?

SkyNews have been using him all afternoon to stoke up ratings. I find his loud aggressive hate rantings quite sickening.

We in Ireland should be hanging our own heads in shame. We long ago surrendered to extreme religious bigotry by introducing blasphemy laws that have decimated the kind of freedom of speech that they have in France.

Ultimately, although there are plenty of moderate Muslims who are happy to integrate into western societies their religious leaders (such as they are; not organized in the same way as say the Catholic Church) really have no interest in any real integration. All religions are daft in their own ways but Islam is the schizoid poster child of religious neuroses in the modern age.

Almost all the Churches had no part in encouraging that law. It was brought in a a sop to the minority religions under the guise of equality. IIRC the currenty crowd intend to repeal it.

Just a few minutes ago on Newstalk, a Trinity law professor Owen O'Dowall believes that to reprint the images in the context of reporting on what happened whould NOT leave the publishers open to any legal action.And that most likely the DPP would dismiss the case as being judicial time wasting.
