Leaving Cert Applied Maths Thread

We're a very small subject and so I think Applied Maths people should stick together, so here's a thread for us.

Let's start with, are you taking Applied Maths inside or outside of school? and what questions are you covering?

As for me, I'm doing Applied Maths in school (one of only 2 girls' schools in the country to offer it

) but we are run simultaneously with LCVP and Careers, so we only get 3 classes a week. So my teacher has to teach a shorter course and so we aren't gonna get proper choice on the paper - she is only teaching Q1,2,3,4,5 and 10.

So I'm teaching myself Q9 just out of terror!

How about you guys?

Depends on ability to be honest, also you really need to focus on more than 6 questions , they can make the questions quite horrible if they want to so a backup is good.

My only problem with it is how easily I forgot it. Maybe ill do it as a back up,
right now im looking at Linear Motion, Projectiles, Particle Dynamics, Collisions, Differential Equations and either RV or SHM.
I'll probably do both just to have back ups on the day, Statics is horrible so I will be forgetting that lol.

I did App Maths in a year, and we would do - in class and as homework - probably no more than 20/25 questions in each topic. It was only when I got to college that I realised that it's quite a common teaching practice to finish the course early (it is, after all, quite short (especially if just covering six/seven topics)) and then cynically go back over years of questions and effectively rote-learn what is supposed to be one of the subjects that least prone to such practices. Well you're just going to have to do seven times the work to get an A in each individual question! What a lot of people seemed to have done is go through all of the last like thirty years of questions until you know them inside out. That way you'll have every method covered. The only difference between mocks and doing an exam on one question in an exam is the scale. It's just six times the size, all else equal.

I'll been doing applied maths outside of school since start of 5th year. Had it once a week in fifth year and twice a week now in sixth year. We're delaying our Mocks till easter as we aren't prepared
We have covered Q1,2,3,4,5,8,10 and are currently revising them. The worrying thing for me Is that when we do a particular topic,i usually learn off most of the method and this gets me an A in most exams. However I feel when the 7 questions are brought together I won't be capable of doing them. Does anyone else get this feeling?

what i did was cover a topic fully and done every question from 2013 back to 1990 on that topic, but make sure you understand every question back until then(if you are aiming for an a1)

I'm half way through Linear Motion and it's not bad so far. This subject does take a lot of thinking, a lot more than the maths I've done in class. I like it though. You really do get to see why you learn all these formulas and their practical uses - plus applied maths seems handy for engineering courses and the like at University level.

At the moment, I'm self-teaching myself, but it's working. Constantly doing questions and have the solutions of them to check if I'm right.

Aspiring has the right idea - it's doing past papers that'll improve you

Mind you, I wouldn't start with the oldest papers - they usually have full questions (rather than a part a and b), and are relatively outdated. I'd start with the early 2000s, work my way back to the 80s, then finish with the late 2000s/2010s

Doing past papers always works. For JC, I almost failed the mocks but got a B on higher maths for the actual exam.

I just did every exam question over and over leading up to June.

You don't necessarily need a class - I certainly learned little enough from class - however as bpb101 said the structure would be useful
