So UTV Ireland is launching on January 01, 2015 with a proper launch of its schedule on January 5.... It's now November 10 and no advertising online, in magazine, newspapers, billboards etc for programmes and launch.

No news on whether it will be on Saorview... probably one of the worst channel launches in history?

Much of the rest of the world call December 26th Boxing Day and this is reflected in the name of the disaster (which has also been known by a couple of other names - none of them the "Stephens Day disaster" funnily).

As an aside I have never heard any such qualms raised about "9/11" (shouldn't it known or referred to as 11/9 here?).

Much of the rest of the World? Don't think so. It is a British invention and is only used in the UK and in certain ex colonies.

Anybody know what bit rate they are using on their HD ? I have to say, their HD looks stunning, even the upscaled stuff is excellent. It makes the SD on Saorview look appalling.

I watched a James Bond film, (The end of "From Russia with love?" The old credit through up " 4K scanning by.."
It may be of interest to watch how much is involved in scanning all the old stuff to 4K and 8K. telecine from the neg even?, and the expense.
I note NHK Japan have said they will go straight to 8K, the future of resolution will be interesting, then there is the opening night of UTV Ireland, described by a media savy Lady on GMU as lovely pictures? What planet are we on?

Very poor so far. Good thing I still have utvhd as the saorview picture is appalling and the schedule is a lot different. I think the prediction of the 2nd most watched channel may be a bit off the mark given the fairly negative reaction to the launch.early days I know but a lot to improve.

"UTV Ireland is in HD for viewers with HD platform providers. For SAORVIEW viewers, UTV Ireland is only available in SD however, we are working towards providing a HD service."

Hope its soon but not holding my breath.

UTV Ireland so far isn't a great channel with weak programming, but it's still better than TV3. Their channel presentation and idents are nicer than UTV NI and the picture quality in HD is stunning, far superior to ITV HD and RTE 2HD.

Saorview is a HD platform, so the first sentence contradicts the second.

This has been the same answer from UTV Ireland since early December as I wondered about the clever response issued in their FAQs - all I will say to this is that they must have engaged with the services of a Public Relations firm handling all their complex queries in the way they have constructed a positive spin on the topic of HD versus SD.

That said, if the RTÉ/2rn transmission fees for HD broadcasts of all non-RTÉ Channels are off the scale versus all the other digital platforms then this is a crazy situation to have been allowed. The continued absence of HD transmissions for all these channels: TV3, TG4, UTV Ireland and 3e and the absence of Oireachtas TV and even IRISH TV suggests all is not well with the Saorview digital tv platform.

There were a few complaints from the Upc viewers over missing the programme.

Yes it is gone for you , options to get it back would be Freesat or if you live near the border , Freeview overspill with a high gain aerial & in other posts here it can be tuned in under other channels with Sky.

Its not telecine from the negative but actually digitally scanning the negative frame by frame. Effect is much the same though.

A lot of "HD" scans are actually from the DVD era, when a lot of movies were scanned at 1440x1152 - 4 times DVD resolution - for the DVD copy and that is what has been scaled; so its good to see that they're actually doing 4K scans this time around!

Its not the cheapest process in the world, but scanning films is still cheaper than producing new HD content though. Early HDTV channels were mostly movies and sports other than the one-off specials and wildlife documentaries that were everywhere.

Have added UTV Ireland HD onto 'other channels' on my Sky box here in NI and can now view the channel in HD (I also have Saorview).

How are 3e showing the Graham Norton Show at the moment?? I thought all rights would have ceased on Jan 1st.

Its a pre Jan 1st episode, assume its the same reason why old Jeremy Kyle episodes can be shown.

Graham Norton welcomed UTV Ireland on the opening night so I would presume he will be shown there too.

Digiguide shows TV3 or rather 3e will be showing The Best of Graham Norton(ie. older shows) rather than recent ones from this Saturday.

UTV Ireland will be showing Graham Norton on Sundays at 10pm. So it will be shown two days after the BBC with ad breaks so I'd ask why bother?

Two reasons:

1. The GN Show, when it's broadcast by the BBC, clashes with The Late Late Show

2. Internet users in the Republic will be able to watch it on demand, i.e. the UTV Ireland Player.

Surely 2 allows for 1?

It's called choice. It's unlikely that anything UTV Ireland place on a Friday night will rate against TLLS. Showing GN simultaneously with the BBC would not effect their ratings. It could always be repeated late night on Sunday Night.

Viewers in the Republic can't watch it on catch-up via BBC iPlayer. They can watch it via UTV Ireland

But who would watch it on UTVi with ads, if they could watch it on BBC1 with no ads?
