Until the bomb dropped: that Master’s degree that I thought I was getting? Turns out I was registered for something else.

What a silly ****. She completely failed to plan accordingly for a move to a different country yet somehow manages to blame everything but that on why she didn't have a good experience here.

Wonderful. You seem really intelligent and circumspect and like you totally learned something from your carefully-considered decision to "move to Ireland" for twelve whole days. The best part of this article was your critical examination of the white privilege dripping off of you like agave syrup down the side of a Pumpkin Spice Latte. As you said in the article, this experience definitely helped you "stretch your boundaries" and "grow as a person," but I'm glad you finally made it back to the safety of the Minnesota coffee shops where you belong!

Its hard to feel that annoyed about a young women that has depression not handling moving to cork well, that articles just a bit depressing to me really, yeah she is really arty in the worst kind of way and seemingly overpriviliged but its hard being on your own and in a new place.
Hell I found living a youth hostel for two months in cork a tough lonely stretch and I was a 30 year old (fairly) mentaly stable Irish guy that knew a few people there

It's one thing to have unreasonable or misguided expectations of a place, but quite another to completely fail to do any research before heading off to a new country and then blaming others when you don't like it. Moaning about timezone differences ffs!

She doesn't even try to aknowledge the fact that she failed so miserably to do any research

There are some things you know in ways you can’t express with logic. Did I come home because the program wasn’t what I thought it was? Was it because my eating disorder was kicking up again in nasty and unexpected ways? Had I finally realized that I had an utterly kickass life back in Minnesota and I wanted it back? There were elements of all of these things, but what it came down to was certainty.

I feel sorry for the person that likely missed out on a college place because of her.

She's an adult starting a masters programme (or yoga lessons or whatever the hell she managed to sign herself up for), she put a lot of blame on her father for getting them lost. It's a small bit but I'm struck by how she didn't say "we got lost" but "he managed to get me lost". After reading it I'm pitying the poor dad...

She says that her degree course wasn't a masters but then she said that she could get a masters after a further 6 months:

The day after she discovered this, she booked her ticket home.

The whole thing sounds like she hadn't prepared adequately or researched her degree course, had a depressive episode, wasn't handling things too well, and went home after 12 days.

More about mental health than anything else. Didn't work out for her, these things happen, we all make mistakes when we are young.

I made the mistake of visiting Cork when I was young. I joke, but seriously, sh*t happens.

Im moving there next year to pick up a professional career which will hopefully last for a long time. What was wrong with it out of interest? I've heard loads of good things about it.

Strongly reminds me of a Valley Girl who was in my Masters class. Had patronisingly romanticised notions of Dublin/Ireland and seemed to have a terrible time adjusting to the reality of the place. Also had the maturity of a 15 year old.
