Will you vote in the gay marriage referendum?

I think it is in May.

I won't because it does not affect me. If they get it passed fair play but I doubt i'm in a minority when I say I have little interest in it.

I think this apathy might be the biggest risk to the referendum and also the appeal of giving the government a harmless (in my view) kicking.

Anyone feel the same way about it? I just could not be bothered. I think it will be like the children's referendum. Very low turnout.

I assume you are aware that marriage was originally not seen as an religious matter by the Christian church, and was a private civil matter.

So it's a bit rich for Christianity to claim ownership of it.

Marriage has been a state regulated matter for centuries. Civil marriage is the only recognised form of marriage in this state (from a legal and policy perspective).

If thats the case, why bother having a referendum...apart from the requirement under the law

The referendum will have no baring on adoption. Legislation for SSC to be able to adopt is,being introduced before the referendum.

I wouldn't call it homophobia as such, but I do wonder why anyone would vote to deny someone else an equal right. That's what puzzles me most.

Why are you more deserving of the legal right to marry than someone else?

Personally, if I had no parents and was still of an age to need some, I couldn't think of better parents than my actual parent's best friends, who are the most gorgeous and loving long term couple that I ever met. Wonderful people, and any child would be lucky to have them as parents.

As I'm 25 and have parents, I doubt very much that I'm a suitable candidate for adoption.

However, I wouldn't see the issue with having two gay parents, male or female. As long as I'm brought up with love and acceptance, how could it be a bad thing?

This isn't a political or fiscal issue being debated, it's people's rights and relationships.

It is a fiscal issue. People's ability to have a relationship is not at issue, this has nothing whatsoever to do with people having relationships. What is at issue is whether that issue should have the legal privileges of marriage. I do not wish to pay more tax for single sex relationships.

The distortion of this debate is its more notable feature, terms such as relationships and equality are bandied about which have nothing to do with the issue at hand.
