So UTV Ireland is launching on January 01, 2015 with a proper launch of its schedule on January 5.... It's now November 10 and no advertising online, in magazine, newspapers, billboards etc for programmes and launch.

No news on whether it will be on Saorview... probably one of the worst channel launches in history?

The initial press releases confirmed that UTV Ireland would basically take the schedule of UTV/ITV. So I'm not quite sure why there's any surprise. They will show the UTV/ITV schedule, without UTV/ITN News, replacing that with an Irish news service. They will produce a few one off shows in the same vain as "Lesser Spotted Ulster" - cheap to make and tick the local programming box.

One thing that TV3 never really did was to broadcast ITV's dramas (with the exception of Downton Abbey). UTV Ireland looks as if they are broadcasting the ITV dramas given they are showing Doc Martin. I'm not sure RTE went for the ITV dramas over the years - A Touch of Frost,Poirot, Inspector Morse, Fat Club, Broadchurch etc.

Are these ITV dramas popular in Ireland?

Also, just how popular is UTV/ITV's daytime lineup with Irish viewers? 'Lorraine', 'This Morning' and 'Loose Women' can't get any more British. Will this go down well with Irish viewers and will they stick with the '"Irish" daytime programming provided by TV3 and RTE.

I like a lot of the ITV dramas but am disappointed to read that UTV Ireland won't be showing the second series of Broadchurch in January, as they don't have the rights. Hope TV3 show it at the same time as ITV then.

RTÉ did air many of these dramas prior to 2001. TV3 by the looks if it had the rights to such dramas and choose not to show them. Bizzare considering they could have shown them on 3e or late night.

Even show ITV daytime during daytime hours of 3e rather than repeat TV3's stuff.

TV3 have the rights haven't heard if they will start it on the 5 of Jan as ITV.

Promos about to kick off on the channel again by the looks of it - no sound at the minute on the HD channel but there is on the SD variation.

Yes that seems odd or maybe the dramas aren't popular here?

Will UTV Ireland provide the news update during 'This Morning' or will they take the ITN report?

Any details yet on what kind of news programmes they will provide at the weekend?

Yes spotted that at lunchtime, thought my telly was on the blink (no sound on channel 116) until I switched to channel 267 for the SD version!

Promos only running on Sky at the moment. Saorview is last for everything !

That won't happen,there isn't any other available EPG slot/number.The slot/number doesn't matter anyway,there are plenty of channels in the 100s,200s etc that people watch, so a higher EPG placing won't make a difference to viewing habits.

116 was the highest EPG slot open to UTVI .. The only way they will go higher is if sky reshuffle the EPG completly (highly unlikely) or if TV3 goes bust or closes 3e.

Well, given that TV3 have no news after 6:00pm, it appears the two of them together add up to one news service. On weekdays at least.

Even a cheap Reality TV programmes are more expensive to produce than to buy in programming. ITV Drama probably cost from 2,000 to 3,000 per hour, while a home produced Reality series could cost from 30,000 to 50,000 per hour (and that is on the very cheap side, realistically a well produced series would cost around 100,000 per hour).

Up until the end of Heartbeat TV3 nearly always had an ITV drama on at 8 on Sunday Night and took spin offs to such shows.

Piorot was always a big show for RTÉ repeating nearly as much as Murder She Wrote before ITV took their share in TV3. I don't think it has been shown on RTÉ since.

TV3 did show a lot of ITV's dramas though over the past few years. They had Cracker, A Touch Of Frost, Bad Girls, Doc Martin, Wild At Heart, Mr Selfridge, Broadchurch, The Royal, Heartbeat, Cold Feet, Footballers Wives, Londons Burning, Life Begins, Lewis, The Knock, Kingdom, Prime Suspect, Rebus, Thief Takers, Time of Your Life, Trial & Retribution, The Vice, Where The Heart Is amongst others.

I wouldn't consider Fat Club as a drama.

I can't take Chris Donoghue seriously on the radio and I highly doubt it will be different on tv. I'd rather listen to someone who doesn't sound like a teenager that has not gone through puberty yet giving me the news and discussing current affairs when i'm tired and cranky in the morning. Don't think I could bare it in the evening either.

I think they did show the first season of L&O UK. If they did show them the stop in the mid-2000s. The Knock was definately on RTÉ 2 when it ran itinally, it could have been repeated by TV3 when they got the ITV contract.

Yep, a lot of those they stopped showing on TV3 around late 2000s.
A Touch Of Frost ran from 2001-2010 (Series7-S14)
Rebus 2007-2008 (S2-3)
Lewis 2006-2009 (S1-2)
The Knock 2001-2003 (S6)
Kingdom 2009-2010 (S1-S2)
Trial And Retribution 2006-2009 (S1-S2,S7-S8,S10)

And for Law And Order UK they broadcast the first 2 series.

If they did bid for Champions League its a big blow not to get the rights but it was TV3's to lose.

With the sports TV3 looks fairly safe, I can imagine that TV3 will decide to carry all of their sports on TV3 rather then pushing some of it to 3e. Purely to help boost audience share.

Barring the Rugby World Cup, which is a one-off event, and their UFC coverage (which is bought in from the promoter and mostly pretaped), right now the Champions League (and the Europa League, if they retain it) is the only ongoing sports coverage TV3 have.

Though week to week it is a major thing to have. And whos to say what other sports they might go after in the future. It will help to keep them closer to 10% IMO.

Interesting to see the current promo loop going out on UTV Ireland showing a very brief introduction from their two main news anchors: Alison Comyn and Chris Donoghue welcoming viewers to check out Ireland's newest TV channel from 7:25pm onwards on New Year's Day Thursday 1st of January 2015. It appears that the channel is going out on all the major digital platforms including Saorview LCN: 06 but only in SD format.

I wonder if it is likely that UTV Ireland will push for their new channel in the Republic to go High Definition (HD) on Saorview ahead of TV3 and if so when it is most likely to happen?

I imagine those in TV3 Group HQ in Ballymount will surely try and have some form of compromise deal negotiated with 2RN to enable TV3 to go out on Saorview in HD in time for the Rugby World Cup television coverage as it would be the perfect opportunity to launch HD standard and further enhance TV3 given the increased competition from UTV Ireland on their home turf.
