I see that Niall Cahalane has become a selector with St.Finbarrs hurling team .....
The McGrath Cup is only a few weeks away ....what kind of a team will be put out ...its anyone guess ....lots of players are with the colleges etc....some more are training as well with the u21s....i am going to pick a team mind you it will be no relation to the one that goes out ! not sure if some of the players i have picked are still with there colleges....

What would it take to get an overhaul of the county board? Unity of 3/4 of the entire clubs to oust the board?. Or are the individuals that want to stay, there as long as they want to stay (or die)

Looks about right. It's a pretty settled team except for who's going to be that 6th forward. Is there anything confirmed about Pa O'Callaghan?

Some of those boys look a bit jaded !!

tis nearly too early to analyse it but we need an injection of new talent and energy and there aren't too many jumping out - maybe with the crew brought in for waterford crystal someone might come out of woodwork

I heard Pa O Callaghan didn't initially get involved but maybe that's changed

Wl Egan is gone travelling and surely Cian Mc, Pa Cronin, Jamie Coughlan have little more to offer - Shane O Neill sadly past his past & Damien Cahalane needs to sharpen up his hurling big time - I thought McDOnnell was the man holding back line together last year

hopefully in coming months we will see somehting to give us room for optimism

Yeah, it's the lack of other options really.

I'm not hugely sold on Cahalane yet but there's nobody else really. I'd have no real fear of O'Neill once he's kept in the corner. Still one of our best I think. He plays a bit of a risky brand of marking and doesn't always come off but it does more often than not. Maccie has been brilliant for 2 years

Half back line is solid but isn't the dominating line that past All-Ireland winning sides have had. Joyce and Ellis are only going to improve though.

We have been lacking goals in the forwards for a while now, no real killer instinct. Harnedy in full forward may rectify that.

Cronin and Coughlan are fine to have on the bench I would've thought.

Full back line looks the most troubling only McDonnell held his own this year, O' Neill looked shaken at full back when moved in, might be worth bringing C. O' Sullivan back into the fold in one corner, Ellis looked strong at c/b and hopefully walsh can drive on. Forwards a plenty if the combinations can be set up, here's looking forward to 2015.

Actually one player I'd love to see developed as a hurler is Peter Kelliher from Kilmichael - dual county minor 2013 - usually played midfield or half forward - but I think he has huge potential as a centre back - big physical player, great hand, speed and strength

Saw him play freshers with CIT this year and he was standout, unfortunately from a hurling perspective it seems football is his first love

Mark O Connor, Cathal Cormack, Kevin O Neill, Kieran Histon others to come to mind from that group apart from those mentioned already

Of course if we had a good U/21 set up ..........

To be fair BandB the u21 setup for 2015 looks more promising with Damien Irwin as manager and the addition of Liam Hayes ....I think we will do very well in the u21 championship in 2015.

Darren McCarthy there trying out in the forwards this season for the earlier competitions since he's been very effective with Ballymartle out the field. Expect Patrick Collins the u-

Former Cork hurler Pat Hartnett (Midleton) has been appointed as a Cork Minor hurling selector for 2015, filling the vacancy left when Mark Landers took up the position of coach of the Cork Senior hurling team.

John Dwyer (Ballincollig), already a selector, will take up the duties of coach.

Don't know about his record as a selector but based on his career as a teak tough operator it's likely that he will not select any 'softies' regardless of how skillful they are.

From the start they were the hungrier, more determined team Midleton were very poor only scoring one point from play in the first half, cause was not helped by the dismissal of McCarthy after the break but this was not a factor. Game showed why rochestown have made progress and Midleton have not, roches hunted in packs whilst very few Midleton players showed enough hunger.

Was at O’Callaghan Cup semi final Rochestown/Midleton CBS today. Comprehensive win for Rochestown. They led from the start and never looked like being reeled in. Finished up 2 14 to 1 8. Rochestown were 9 up at h/t (2 6 to 0 3) and the closest Mid got was within 7 pts with 10 mins or so to go. All the big performances were on the Rochestown side as the score line might suggest. Very solid down the middle – Griffin at full back, Cashman at centreback, Eoin O’Brien midfield, Ciaran Cormack centre/full forward. Sean Pouter in the corner had a smashing game. Impressive spread of scorers for the winners: Eoin o’Brien (0 3), Paddy Lynch (0 2), Ciaran Cormack (1 4), Liam O’Sullivan (0 2), Sean Pouter (1 1), Diarmuid O’Mahony (0 2). All Rochestown scores were from play with the exception of one from Cormack, a 65 with the last puck of the game (only for Cormack having a real off day on frees Rochestown would have won by more). Looking at the the Midleton players, hard to pick out too many stars on the day. They certainly seemed dis-spirited following their elimination last week from Harty. John Looney their leading scorer with 3 frees and 1 point from play. Dan Landers substituted at h/t with no score but a suggestion of injury. Billy Dunne replaced with 15 minutes to go - no score. Hard for a team to pull off results if the big names are having off days. Brendan McCarthy being sent off for two yellows with about 15 minutes to go certainly didn’t help their cause. And Seneadh Smith had to leave the pitch with a few minutes to go with a shoulder injury. Hopefully not too serious as he was one of the few Midleton players who looked county minor class on the day. Also Gary Leahys absence through injury didn’t help their cause but then Shane Kingstons suspension didn’t seem a factor for Rochestown All in all a great 10 days or so for Rochestown - still in contention in all 4 big competitions.

Not the great game that many expected today. It was evident in the warm up that mentally the Midleton players weren't up for this game. They were veil lethargic and sloppy and there was no pace or intensity about them. On the other hand Rochestown looked very focused.

First Half:
The early minutes were tight with John Looney opening the scoring before Rochestown completely took over. Eoin O Sullivan put in some huge hits in midfield and won a lot of ball which gave Rochestown a great platform. Rochestown played most of the game with only 2 or 3 forwards in their opponents half. They left Powter and Cormac inside the 40 1v1 on their men and a third forward operated just inside their own half. This system worked to perfection for the opening game. Number 15 picked up a ball around midfield and played a lovely diagonal ball to Powter on the 21 but out to the left of the goal. This guy has fierce pace and is incredibly strong. He turned his man and ran at the goal, drew Ian Cahill the Midleton Full Back and popped the pall to Cormack who finished it with ease. Midleton torn apart yet decided not to play a loose defender in front of the two Rochestown forwards, which left them very exposed. Rochestown numbers 13/15 operated out in the middle third and were most effective as the second and third tackler and helped to turn over a lot of ball. Rochestown centre forward also played in around midfield and was very often in his own teams half, and amazingly the Midleton centre back followed him and left a huge gap right down the spine of the defence. Given this tactic midfield became very congested and there was an awful lot of rucks which wasn't pretty, the game didn't flow. Rochestown picked off some nice points before Powter once again isolated 1v1 inside scored the second goal and it really was all over then. Given the additional bodies Rochestown had in paid field their centre back Cashman simply dropped back on the edge of the D and shielded the full back line.

Second half:
Midleton move Ian Cahill from 3 to 14 but he didn't get near a ball for the entire half. Once again Rochestown played Cormac and Powter inside but Midleton finally played a man in front and this negated this treat greatly. Midleton introduced a few subs and this brought some life to the team. Butty McCarthy got the line rightly so for a second yellow, but the ref missed a wild pull on him by the Rochestown no5 just before that, so it was a case of him taking the law into his own hands. Ironically after he walked Midleton enjoyed their beat spell and began to run at the Rochestown Half Back line and they created some chances and drew some frees, one such run leading to a great goal, potential weakness in this Rochestown team. Midleton played some lovely 30/35 yard passes from the HB line but lacked penetration inside and once again began to fall foul of Rochestown tactic of swarming midfield. Powter continued to threaten inside and he was denied by a great save with around 10 mins left. The game petered out from here and Rochestown were well worth their win.

To sum up it is hard to know how good this Rochestown team are, they play to a system that is similar to Donegal in football, leaving two forwards inside the forty and the rest swarming midfield and their own half back line, where they work and tackle with real aggression. The big question is will they persist with it once Kingston returns? Midleton showed in glimpses that they can play very nice hurling but were physically dominated today and they had no stomach for a battle. Granted they suffered a huge disappointment last week, but today was a huge opportunity for them to show what they are are truly made of and in a way they did.

On a side note it was not nice to see the behaviour of one manager/selector today. I presume this guy is a teacher and if so he left his school down. Foul language towards his own players and getting involved with the opposition players, when there was no need.
