Why is it illegal to sell/purchase sex?

Why exactly, if anyone knows?

We 'sell' our skills, ideas and our bodies (manual workers, soldiers, black-market organs, etc) but sex is still a crime to purchase with money. Paying for sex with candles, dinner and wine is called romance.

Instead of punishing one party to a 'criminal activity', should it just be legalised?

I think a person should be able to sell their body for sex. I'm fairly sure the percentage that actually enjoy the work is tiny but how many people are forced into a job they hate?

While prostitution is probably the worst horrible job you can have, in some cases it may well be better than nothing. Is it any better to take away peoples fall back, last resort job and force them onto the streets?

That isn't prostitution then, is it? No-one is seeking to legitimise human trafficking, holding people against their will and raping them, so for the purpose of a simple conversation, we will be speaking about people who choose to sell sexual pleasure to another for money.

The fact is the red light district is one of the safest parts of the city because the police patrol the area constantly.

I would imagine the risk of exploitation or forced prostitution is only increased by illegality.

If the welfare of the men and women involved in prostituion is the primary concern, then surely this is best served by taking them out of the criminal sphere where they are at serious risk of coercion, and putting them into a regulated and supervised system which ensures appropriate health and welfare safeguards are in place, and provides enough resources to ensure that people who want an out have one.

Ridiculous law. Just goes to show incapable we are that we can't even set up a prostitution industry in an ultra safe environment for everyone involved. Regulate it with harsh penalties, constant health and welfare screening, taxing systems policing etc.

But criminalising it leads to worse crime - exploitation, trafficking, pimping, and puts the prostitutes at greater risk of violence and abuse by both pimps and johns.
