We don't even know what spees they were doing and what the limit was.

Yaris was about to turn right and indicated early enough. No need to speed up if you know you are going to brake soon.

There are many reasons people go slower, they might not be famliar with the area etc. We all whant to drive as fast as we prefer but it is not always possible. What is slow for you might be fast for someone else.

Overtaking car signalling turning right is a big no imo, no matter if it is slow Yaris or BMW doing 100 km/h.

Ah the usual Irish thing of "the driver in front of me forced me to overtake dangerously at a junction with a car coming towards us".

Really wish I had a dash cam last night, at around 18:15 I was traveling from Rathnew to Rathdrum and was behind a blue 03 Passat that was swerving all over the road. He / she even hit the ditch on one occasion sending bits of plastic shooting across the road.

Really early to be drunk I thought.

Tragedy

The overtaker waited until visibility was good, overtook in good time leaving plenty of space between him and the cars he was overtaking. There's only 4 seconds between the Yaris indicating and the car appearing along side and in that situation, jamming on is as (more?) dangerous than completing the legal overtaking maneuver.

The car overtaking also completed the overtake before the sideroad.

Much ado about nothing - although it would be different if the car had started the overtake after the Yaris had started indicating.
Which quite obviously isn't the case here, given the speed differential when the Leon appears.

4 seconds is nothing in an overtake. Some people really just want a reason to be hysterically angry.

How long do you think it takes a car to go from 70-110km/h (or 60-100, or 80-120)? It's a lot more than 4 seconds for almost every car in Ireland.

Unless you're driving dangerously, it takes several seconds just to pull out to overtake, nevermind to actually start to overtake.

Go on Jesus., tell us how it is possible to overtake a car in less than 4seconds unless you're driving like a nutter with a superbike/sports car?

You said it was 4 seconds after the Yaris indicated that he appeared. That's what I'm commenting on. His overtake time would've been more than four seconds anyway. He must have seen the Yaris indicate when he began pulling out.

I do agree with you that people get all hysterical about nothing. This wasn't really that bad IMO. He probably still should've seen the indicator though.

I've overtaken thousands of cars on the old N7 and the N69 to Listowel. Genuinely thousands.
You have a really incredibly unrealistic expectation of how long it takes to overtake - and God help you the first time you try to overtake a car, pull out, discover the laws of physics and bang head on into an approaching car because it takes a surprisingly significant amount of time to overtake.

What are you on about? I've overtaken thousands in my time too. What I haven't done though, is move out and then see someone indicating right and continue to go after them, reaching them 4 seconds later. If I pulled out and seen someone indicating right I'd ease off and go back in.

When the car flicked on it's indicators, the Leon was already alongside the poster's car in the video.

You've portrayed it as if the car only pulled out to overtake after the indicators are on.

You've suggested that 4 seconds is loads of time to overtake and that he must be in a low powered car for it to take him so long to perform the overtake.

In short, if you drive like you post you'd be dead a long time ago. Most deaths are related to overtaking, with a significant amount relating to poor judgement in the time and distance necessary to overtake. Most people underestimate it, and here we have Jesus doing just that.

Never said 4 seconds is loads of time to overtake. I said 4 seconds is a long time in driving. As you said yourself, it was 4 seconds before the car came alongside after the Yaris indicated, not complete the overtake.

If he was already alongside the posters car then why'd it take him 4 more seconds to appear in the screen?

Second car did not hold back because of any side road. Its totally invisible at that point, safe dotted white line, no sign posts to indicate any road of any kind, no slip road or hatch markings. Massively wide road. It is literally the perfect place to overtake. Couldn't be more ideal. Your just arguing for the sake of it.

No we're not. We're saying the person he called "impatient" and posted a video of did nothing wrong. This has nothing to do sherfin passing anyone? We're talking about the other car. Point I'm making about sherfin is he left no room for anyone else to pass him, so cars behind would have to pass numerous cars to have any chance of making progress.

WOW and I got a bollocking for the cycling argument :P This looks like its gonna go on for a while. To be absolutely fair (although I personally think the guy overtaking was impatient) Sherfin does seem a wee bit close, again IMHO.

One more thing - there is no way that maneuver was one that was considered for any length of time by someone stuck behind Sherfin - that was someone roaring up behind and overtaking and as such the Yaris was indicating before the move was made. That or that class or crappy hatchback accelerate a damn sight quicker that I thought.

Not overly convinced on the space left for the car on the opposing carriageway either but that might just be a perception thing from the footage.

Hi guys, just in from work, sorry, didn't think it would start a debate.
@IrishMover, yes N2 at Balrath
Both the Yaris and I had just joined the N2 from Kentstown only about a minute before this. Limit 100 Yaris is doing about 80.
There's a bit of a rise coming up followed by a long straight, where I was going to pass when I was 100% sure it was safe
(Yes, I might be a bit careful sometimes) Don't think I was tailgating, maybe just the cam
The car overtaking was already on the N2 before we joined and due to the Yaris they soon caught up.
They also overtook at least one car behind me (maybe 2), I pulled left so that the car just behind me would see that the Yaris is turning in, and in case the Yaris didn't check their side mirrors before crossing
It's not a side road btw.
All in all it wasn't a huge deal.
